From Warseer:
Clockwork
Well, its not a direct analogy no. But they are both hobbies which require a big cash injection to get started. They then both provide hours of entertainment (gaming vs modelling, painting and gaming).
I don't want to derail this into a GW price debate, and there are certainly cheaper alternative table top wargames out there. But the point is when you put it into context with dropping £400-500 on the latest console or a gaming PC, getting a small force for less than £100 isn't too bad.
Vanguard Clash is out! Its only 0.99p so I've picked up a copy. Thoughts soon.
Well its 19 pages in iBook format. 6 are fluff and 6 are rules. The rest is just guff.
The recommended points size is 500-750 points with standard Battleline deployment.
For the purposes of the scenario, you gain a special rule "Outrider Elite" if all the units you choose fit into one or more of several categories (has the Scout or Vanguard Special Rule, etc). There's 6 categories to qualify and this Special Rule has three effects:
1) All units gain Vanguard and Swiftstride if they didn't have it before.
2) All ranged weapons gain Quick to Fire (losing Move or Fire if they had it).
3) All Cavalry and Chariots have Devestating Charge when they go into a flank or rear (this should be a default rule imo...).
In addition, if both players agree, the winner of the Vanguard Clash may choose the next full size game type instead of rolling, or wins any draws in the roll off to see who goes first and may re-roll their result (Accepting the second even if its worse).
Immediate thoughts: Great! A scenario that really encourages mobility and speed over big units, and can tie over into a larger game without giving one player an unfair advantage. Looks like a lot of fun and I'd like to start working it into all my games.
Secondary thoughts: Dark Elves are broken as balls in this scenario. Dark Riders + Dark Steed Master + Shades + Warlocks + Scourgerunner Chariot, all with Vanguard and Quick to Fire Repeater Crossbows O.O
Edit2: Mmmm... Lizardmen. Quick to Fire Poison Blowpipes, but you are limited entirely to Skink units, which makes sense.[/quote
