Blog NIGHTBRINGER's Terrain & Warhammer Woodworking Projects

I know... and I like how you adapted it to your situation... really poetic... especially when seeing high temperature is the main cause of both downfalls...

Though Icarus really should have known what will happen... while no one could expect that water effect stuff to be the wax in this story...

Sorry about the desert oasis disaster (Life just isn't life without tragedies :( ).

On a much brighter note, i looked up the photos of the cottage you've made long ago, and i have to say, it has been AMAZING experiencing the progress you've made on the cottage! :snaphappy:
Thank you kindly my friend! :)

A sad little update. :(

In progress shot of the desert oasis before the disaster...

First the good, finished the palm trees for my desert oasis...

And now the disaster. GW's water effects ruined my terrain piece (even though I only applied a thin layer [1-2mm] and allowed it 48+ undisturbed hours to dry). Sadly, the water pool was my first airbrush project.

Well a quick update. The oasis is officially dead.

I tried hitting the surface with a heat gun. It actually semi liquefied and all the imperfections disappeared. However, once it solidified again some of the imperfections returned, but it was better than before. Spurred on by this marginal amount of success I made a second attempt at it but I must have been a bit overzealous with the heat gun this time around and warped the acrylic underneath.

In hindsight, it would have been better to sand the piece as @LizardWizard had suggested. That was my backup should the heat solution fail, however I did not anticipate the warping of the under layer of acrylic. Live and learn I suppose.

In any event, the piece is no longer salvageable. RIP Desert Oasis 2018-2018.

Maybe I'll make a replacement one day, but for now I'll move onto finishing other projects (projects without water features!!).

~I foolishly dared to fly too close to the sun on wings of feathers and GW water effects~

Well if nothing else you at least learned something from the effort (as in what not to do next time). Good luck for when you try again!

Good advice, thank you! :)

This is true, what that lesson is remains to be seen. I've narrowed it down of one of two things:
  1. do not attempt to create terrain with water features of any sort (a.k.a. do not attempt to step beyond the limits of my skill/comfort)
  2. do not use GW water effects :rage:

Edit: I also learned to keep the heat gun away from backings made of acrylic. :p

What you have can be salvaged... ...the Old Ones have a plan.

But good lessons summary...

The trees can. The rest will have to be redone.

They have forsaken us.
Don’t throw the rest away. No kidding. I have a plan.

You have a band saw, Yes?
It might involve a bandsaw.
Has it been a week?
Also, how extensive was the warping/melting?

Honestly it isn't even worth it to try. With less effort I can make a new one. It will never look as good as I want it too. The bottom is warped, the Water Effects on top is wrecked.
