Speaking of previous starter box sets, let's take a look at which armies have been represented and how many times...
4th Edition - High Elves vs. Orcs & Goblins
5th Edition - Lizardmen vs. Bretonnia
6th Edition - The Empire vs. Orcs & Goblins
7th Edition - Dwarfs vs. Orcs & Goblins
8th Edition - High Elves vs. Skaven
In terms of the number of times each army has been featured, that leaves us with...
Orcs & Goblins - 3
High Elves - 2
Lizardmen - 1
Bretonnia -1
The Empire -1
Dwarfs - 1
Skaven - 1
Beastmen - 0
Chaos Dwarfs - 0
Daemons of Chaos - 0
Dark Elves - 0
Ogre Kingdoms - 0
Tomb Kings - 0
Vampire Counts - 0
Warriors of Chaos - 0
Wood Elves - 0
I'd say enough with the Orcs & Goblins! They are featured in 3 out of the 5 starter kits (sometimes as Orcs and at other times purely as Goblins). The big surprise is that Chaos, in any format, has never been featured.
Should GW try to feature some unrepresented armies or revert back to the old tried and true choices of the past? Or one of each?
You make a very valid point. Can I change my vote? I'd like to swap it to Beastmen vs Wood Elves. That's a pretty classic match-up, and neither army has been featured. Unless they bring Kislev back as a separate army - then Chaos (To clarify: any kind of Chaos but I would prefer Chaos Warriors) vs Kislev.
