Speaking of previous starter box sets, let's take a look at which armies have been represented and how many times...

4th Edition - High Elves vs. Orcs & Goblins
5th Edition - Lizardmen vs. Bretonnia
6th Edition - The Empire vs. Orcs & Goblins
7th Edition - Dwarfs vs. Orcs & Goblins
8th Edition - High Elves vs. Skaven

In terms of the number of times each army has been featured, that leaves us with...

Orcs & Goblins - 3
High Elves - 2
Lizardmen - 1
Bretonnia -1
The Empire -1
Dwarfs - 1
Skaven - 1

Beastmen - 0
Chaos Dwarfs - 0
Daemons of Chaos - 0
Dark Elves - 0
Ogre Kingdoms - 0
Tomb Kings - 0
Vampire Counts - 0
Warriors of Chaos - 0
Wood Elves - 0

I'd say enough with the Orcs & Goblins! They are featured in 3 out of the 5 starter kits (sometimes as Orcs and at other times purely as Goblins). The big surprise is that Chaos, in any format, has never been featured.

Should GW try to feature some unrepresented armies or revert back to the old tried and true choices of the past? Or one of each?

You make a very valid point. Can I change my vote? I'd like to swap it to Beastmen vs Wood Elves. That's a pretty classic match-up, and neither army has been featured. Unless they bring Kislev back as a separate army - then Chaos (To clarify: any kind of Chaos but I would prefer Chaos Warriors) vs Kislev.

But the Warriors are the best ones! :(
I would totally buy a Chaos Warriors versus Kislevites Box Set. Even if the new game ultimately was a flop. In the End you have to just like the Miniatures.

It is definitely an intriguing idea and one that I would be interested in. However, my question assumes that GW will release a traditional 2 army starter kit, and if that were the case, should they go with previously featured armies or armies that have not yet been utilized in a starter kit previously?
So I guess there is your answer: Kislev & WoC.

Kislev & Chaos Warriors

Just considering what the contents and possibilities of such a box might be. Chaos has invaded Kislev so many times they would be spoiled for choice on when to set it in history.

A Chaos Spawn
12 Chaos Warriors
5 Marauder Horse

An Ice Beast
5 Winged Lancers
20 Kislevite Axemen

One Hero each side: maybe a L2 Kislevian Ice Witch and a Exalted L1 Hero?

Rule Cards for all units and the Ice Witches’ Frost spells.

Scenario booklet with battle setups from three or four different eras on the Old Wyrld timeline.

That is a boxed set that would allow them to make the point that this NewOldhammer can be used for a battle almost anywhen during the history of the WFB world. (If they wanted to take that approach.)

I like this idea, but perhaps we should make it more balanced? How about:

Exalted Champion on Beast of Chaos
12 Chaos Warriors
5 Marauder Horse

vs

Boyar on Great Bear
20 Kisletive Kossars (great axe + bow)
5 Winged Lancers or Ungol Horse Archers (seriously, it wouldn't be too hard to make a box that has the options for both of these. Separate armor plates for legs is easy, separate heads is easy; Selection of arms would be some armored, some not. Only tricky part is the torsos since Lancers need armor and Ungol don't?)

That force mix works for me @Tk’ya’pyk

I like these polls! I already took two of the ones that @NIGHTBRINGER did, this one was also fun.

I am taking "wishlist" approach to this one. The box sets I remember are:

- Bretonnia vs. Lizardmen

- Empire vs. Orcs/Goblins

- Dwarfs vs. Orcs/Goblins

- High Elves vs. Skaven

I would LOVE to see the revival of Bretonnia and Tomb Kings heralded by a triumphant new double box set of the fearless Bretonnian cavalry charging across the deserts of Araby against the Tomb King chariots and skeletal infantry. That would have the potential for so much lore and awesomeness and really bring to life a part of the Old World lore and the crusades and stuff...

...BUT I doubt that one will happen, too much potential for political issues probably, and it would involve GW bringing back TWO new factions at once.

I would also love to see a revival of the Dwarfs vs. Goblins box set, I always wanted to buy that one. If they brought back the Bretonnians a revival of the Bretonnia vs. Lizardmen box set would also be pretty cool!

Much more likely than my Tomb Kings vs. Chaos Dwarfs! :D:D

Which might actually be a brilliant tactic to signal to players that this game is a genuine continuation of WFB. It would also distinguish it from AoS. IF they were going to bring both Bretonnia and Tomb Kings back, featuring them in the starter box together would be a pretty good idea.

True, it would be pretty cool to see these two factions clash in a desert-themed box and I would love to see it. More likely we will see empire vs. chaos :meh:.

Although Lizardmen vs. Daemons of chaos would be pretty sweet :wideyed:, could call it the Battle of Itza or Fall of Temple City X or whatever name. Would be pretty thematic for sure.

Edit: Previous post now includes photos. Also went and found your previous post with the list, awesome!

Not going to happen, but… Lizardmen vs Skaven

not only a classic, lore-wise… but also highly on topic, given that the physical destruction of the old world saw involved both of them, on the opposite sides.

Pretty thematic, too. Bretonnia went on Crusades with the Empire in Araby against chaos-worshippers and lost a lot of their troops who accidentally strayed into Khemri...

As most people have revealed their choices, it is only fair that I reveal mine.

That was actually one of my choices - the armies contrast each other pretty well (Bretonnia with small numbers of heavily-armoured cavalry and Tomb Kings with lightly-armoured but plentiful Skeleton infantry) and neither have been in a recent boxed game (Bretonnia have featured in one but that was all the way back in 5th Edition). It would also confirm to all the potential players that the two most poorly-treated armies in the game would be back in business, which would restore a lot of faith in GW (it would certainly restore mine).

My other choice was Bretonnians vs Beastmen, as again, the two armies contrast really well in terms of structure and mechanics, as well as being the perfect foils lorewise (feudal knights who are the paragons of order vs a tribal race that hates everything to do with order). In addition, Beastmen were another poorly-treated army in 8th Edition, so again having these two races in the boxed game would act as a subconscious signal to the fanbase that GW would be intending to atone for their mistakes.

I think I'm going to nominate Bretonnians vs Tomb Kings on the poll because it would be the ultimate sign of repentance on the part of GW and the artwork would look great, with the brightly-coloured Bretonnians against the sea of gold of the Tomb Kings.

Not going to happen, but… Lizardmen vs Skaven

That would be another very thematic choice, again with two armies that are perfect foils to each other, but given that Skaven featured in the previous box, it would be a bit repetitive on the rat front.

EDIT: Having just voted, I'm fascinated to see that after Lizardmen (which is to be expected given that this is a Lizardman forum), Bretonnia are second and Tomb Kings are third.
This pleases me.jpg

Well, of course with a setting as TOW, made to draw back to the game people that went away, it would make sense to have a starting pack with two "discarded" armies, so TK and Bretonnia would make a solid box.

If we pick something that was never been made, with armies that never saw a box, a nice change could be:

"a matter of Life and Death"
Wood elves vs Tomb Kings.
life vs Death, forest vs desert.

The downside is that both WE and TK share a somewhat similar playstyle (they both adopt a finesse approach, with ranged support). From this pov, VC could also work for the life vs Death… and probably even better than TK.

That would be a lot of fun. If it was a "Warhammer legends" style you could throw Tenehuanin in there and call it the War of the Rat/Sotek or something, put it back during that big war. Fit some new models in for them too, that would be fun!

I said Beastmen because I believe they should have their day in the sun along with another army that has't been in some sort of starter set. Apparently I am the only one!

I think they should do multiple starter sets with different combos - that way you get people buying ALL the different kits GW make off the bat to expand lots of different armies rather than having a heavy amount of sales on people just expanding what comes with a normal style tarter set.

Oh, I like this idea! How about starter sets like for Warcry? One hero + one or two MSU's per side?

Man, This brings back so many memories of starting Warhammer and refusing to paint and using a whole bottle of glue on every model

This was the first set I ever had after getting interested in some other random old LOTR mini's that were all broken and worn down in a little box.

I originally voted for Lizardmen and Bretonnia but after some more thinking and agreeing with Ty'ya'pyk I think a Wood-elves and beastmen box would be awesome, I think they would deserve something to really show their rivalry and also give them a bit more attention.

Though Skaven and Lizardmen could also be good, Too many great choices lol

That would be a very nice starter box - once again a classic rivalry and one faction that is clearly good vs one that is clearly evil, and two factions that have never featured in a boxed game. Great choice! :)
