8th Ed. The new book: Everything in one place! [Out of date!]

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 25/07]

Thinking about the Ripperdactyl frenzy issue a bit, if the Skink Chief can still take a BSB it'll pretty much take care of that issue. Re-rollable LD 7 with Cold Blooded puts us at a 96.2% chance to pass. Should make for a solid assassination unit.

Still curious how the frog placement works... Like can we put it in any unit? Or can it only be placed in specific troop types? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

EDIT: Any of you guys with the WD able to decipher whether the Predatory Fighter rule is capped at 1 extra attack, or is it possible to get more? Like a Scar-Vet who rolls 2 6's to hit would suddenly have 6 attacks instead of 4. Could be fun and would make us almost like a Vampire. Almost...

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 25/07]

I have a hard time believing that Bastiladon is only toughness 5 he's like a lil tank and he's got way more armor then a Steg I'd be disappointed if he was less than a 6 I mean Ironblasters are T6 and they're ramshackle cannons and a rhino lol

Being a buff wagon a high toughness would be sensational so we don't get insta deathed to much by warmachines that are a dime a dozen. Even with the new clearer pictures the Bastiladon looks adorable I just wanna pinch his widdle scaly cheeks! :D Certainly one of my favorites of the new models!

I really hope Sacred Spawnings are in so we don't have to rely to much on buffs from the Slann or the other buffy beasts we seemed to have gained

Ya' know? Someone mentioned that lack of Sacred Spawnings would drive up sales of the new monsters.... AND the new buff engine.... I highly doubt we'll get both.... Imagine a Sacred Saurus block, buffed by the Wagon, then buffed by Slan, etc..... I would be too good to be true....

An a side note. I'm really excited by the Carnosaur! Which leads me to ask: If I wanted to get the old model, should I get it off E-Bay now? Or after the new Releases? Will the new models make the price drop, or would it drive it up?

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

First page updated with some stuff we didn't know before from the WD, copied here for reference:

  • There seems to be no indication that Spawnings are making a return, as the GW painting team indicate that this was purely an aesthetic choice when painting the minatures.
Skink Chiefs are 40 points. They can ride Terradons for 35 and Ripperdactyls for 40 (Given that Terradons used to be the same price for the mount as the unit, I think we can safely assume these new points values for the unit also). Chief weapon options have dropped by 25-50%.
Scar-Vets have dropped by 5. Cold One mounts are still 20. Light armour and shields appear to have gone up by one point each but other equipment remains the same.
Carnosaurs have two types of upgrades available: one for 15 and the other 25. Its unclear what these are.
Skink Priests have a new special rule and have lost Channelling. The wording is unclear but it looks like "Arcance Vassal." I'd suspect its similar to Channelling anyway. They can indeed take Beasts. Same points costs.
BSBs as before, with the Slann still being able to be BSB and General.
Terradons and Rippers are both strength 4 toughness 3, though Rippers have a slightler better initiative (3). Otherwise they seem identical to current Terradons.
Salamanders have gone up by 5 but no other changes (they have Spout Flame but it doesn't say what it does).
Razordons down by 10. They have gained the special rule "Impenetrable Defence" as well as retaining "Shoot Barbs." Again, this rules aren't explained.
Ancient Stegadon unchanged stat and ruleswise: "Unless taken as a mount for a Skink Chief, may replace Giant Blowpipes with Engine of the Gods" for 50 points. Base cost down by 45. The crew have no T/W values so I assume they can't be targetted seperately!
Skink Oracles have Arcane Vassal like the Priests. They don't have a T/W value so I assume you use that of the Troglodon, like Chariots! 4+ Scaly Skin and cause Terror. The Oracle may take a Divining Rod for 15 points but no rules given.

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

Cool beans man, I deff missed the fact that the skinks had no T W on the steg profile. I will revere you as a saint if you can make out what the two carno upgrades are. The top one looks like "Legging Scales" or "Lightning Scales" or something but neither really make sense...

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

I think the second is something like 'Bloodroar.'

The top may be 'Lunging Strike' or 'Stride?' Its definately Lxgxing Sxxxlx'

EDIT: Unlike the Skink Chief, Priests may still be mounted on Engines of the Gods.

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

Looking at it again, I am inclined to agree with Lunging Strike and Bloodroar

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

Am I the only one greatly dissapointed that our Monstrous Cavalry are a measly T3? That just seems wrong when a Great Eagle is T4 (I guess those feathers are really hard to penetrate...).

Slann says out MC is T5 or T7 whichever he so chooses.... IT WILL BE DONE!

lol

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

Meh, if they are priced right, it won't be anything a little Wyson's won't fix. I invission 2+D3+1 attacks at S5 with armor piercing and killing blow, with T4, a 3+save and on the flank. Haha, and if you get a hand of glory on them, lets up that WS!

Seriously, I know I am describing a perfect scenario, but you can't forget how much of a roll magic plays for us with some of the best casters in the game. If your taking ripperdactyles and they have an important target to take out, then buff them on the turn they charge, and if your opponent stops those spells, fine then, enjoy the buffs I am going to give to my saurus or the stampede of dinosaurs heading your way.

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

I'm happy to hear the Steg is looking like one profile. In my opinion that makes it much better.

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

I will agree. While I still don't care for the Bastilidon model I think it make running them and Stegs with skink riders viable.

Anything in the batrep that might hint at what the Divining Rod does?

In terms of real-life, Divining Rods are used to find ground water. Could be that this item is used to help find lost magical items and has some cool effect on them. Maybe it just means that your opponent has to state what all his magic items are? Or perhaps it's an actual Divining Rod and just lets the Oracle tell the Trogladon where he can go skinny dipping.

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

A quick google search on warhammer divining rods comes back with a blog who used it in a special scenario... and now while I would take it with a grain of salt it does seem like a plausable item usage.

Prior to deployment, nominate one character to carry the divining rod. Bound spell with casting value of 8 (One use only). Nominate 1 model in LoS and within 18”. If successfully cast, destroy one random magic item on the model. If an Irresistible Force is rolled while using the rod, the user takes a ST 10 hit. The divining rod counts as a magic item.

Now this has ZERO support in the WD but it's the only reference I could find.

I really hope its not a bound spell, I totally fail to understand why they keep inventing units with bound spells since a bound spell is always an inherently less efficient use of dispel dice than casting a spell with your L4. When next edition rolls around they really need to do something to make bound spells competitive with regular magic somehow.

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

well, actually the only 2 things which make me happy are the author and the models. Rippers are interesting and i hope they are useful... and sadly i think we still have no hammers :\
ok, we have monsters, but we won't field them so much because of artillery. I think we needed some smashy unit, and we didn't get them. I still hope spawnings are back, but i don't think so. I think that i will run my army in the same way i've always done, and it's quite sad

No. The Trogolodon gets charged by a Necrolith Colossus, then dies.

It can't do too much if its only 15 points...

I do like the idea of a Skink Treasurer Hunter, and a blind subterranean monster, though.

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

I love innate bound spell abilities or bound spells on one use only items. Throw 6 dice, get those double 6s and keep sailing fine. I do it with my TK casket all the time :)

I think the Trog needs a ward save... let it be so! I agree that T5 and 4+ armor is a bit squishy. Who knows, it might wind up being worth the risk if it has a lot of useful functionality.

Re: The new book: Everything in one place! [updated 26/07]

I think it will genuinely depend on how powerful the Spit Venom is. At the moment its not worth 200 points just for Predatory Fighter on 5+ once per game.

As it stands, Ancient Stegadons and Salamanders seem the best choice in Rare (As ever...)
