8th Ed. The BEST close combat units in all of Warhammer.

Skullcrushers' situation is kinda weird.
2 matches to go, and they must face the undisputed leader, and the last one.
I think the spider is an auto Massive Victory for the Skullcrushers, but I don't think the Destroyer is an auto Massive Loss. It's a fun and interesting situation.

Yep, my guess is a "simple" victory for the k'daii.
But we'll see.
I agree, that is probably the most likely outcome... unless the Skullcrushers can manage to reverse it and score the ordinary victory for themselves. I think it will be a very close contest, but who knows.

Oh man. @NIGHTBRINGER you just made my day. What a fantastic match-up to have a win on! :D
The Mournfang deliver one last miracle!... or can they nab another off the Soul Grinder?!? (both the Skullcrushers and the Demigryphs managed to beat it, I think the Mournfang have a fair chance)

For the time being, they are in 11th place overall.

I see I leap quite behind on your matchups, questions and memes, 3 days with not a lot of time to be online ;)

So here we go:
(commenting on Round #12)

Who do you favour of these four?
WITCH ELVES!!!

Round 12, Match #8 - Witch Elves vs. Savage Orc Big'uns

Key rules in play:
  • Savage Orcs: Choppas, Frenzy, Warpaint
  • Witch Elves: ASF, Murderous Prowess, Poisoned Attacks, Frenzy
View attachment 91862

You could say that was a frenzied affair. Quick, bloody and decisive. The Savage Orcs actually had an advantage in unsaved wounding rate per attack, but with the Witch Elves going first, they never got to unleash their full compliment of attacks.

The Witch Elves move out of the four-way tie for forth place and claim sole possession of it. The loss puts the final nail in the coffin of the Savage Orcs' (longshot) bid for a third place finish.

Things are getting heated, with each contestant having only 3 matches left to fight.

Yeah WITCH ELVES :)

Here are the updated standings...

O how I fear the matchup of Witch Elves vs Chaos Trolls

Grrr, Imrahil

Now for round #13:

Holy cow, you are going fast

- The K'daai did what was expected from him
Good meme :D

- How did the Witch Elves loose the first round to the Spider... Would they have lost if it weren't for the lack of wounds from the Spider.
Good outcome though.

2 - poor arachnarok. It almostanaged something against those damned elves
watch your tone there sir... o wait, it actually looks like a compliment ;)

***also tried the this matchup starting with 6-wide vs. 6-wide frontage. The Demigryphs end up with 13.5 wounds remaining.

This has to be the key weakness of the Beasts. S4 is going to do nothing against a 1+ save. Foregone conclusion. Like I said before on the Dark Elf match-up that was like this one, if the Demigryphs charged I'd either countercharge with a high strength unit (as I have a little bit of time with the Regen rule in play), or just decide that the Beasts are going to keep the Demigryphs from doing anything else in the game.

The thing is that they kept the DK's tied up for 7 turns(!!!), considering that no-one will be able to charge on turn 1, that's basically 8 turns before they are wiped out.

I've yet to play a battle that lasted this long, so at least the Beasts vs a highly armoured unit would keep them out of the game. Might come in handy as a tactic.

@NIGHTBRINGER was this the same result with the Skullcrushers? I don't recall the fight lasting as long...

It was 'just' five rounds:

Last match of this round, and we have two powerhouses! Skullcrushers of Khorne vs. Beasts of Nurgle.

Key rules in play:
  • Skullcrushers: MoK, Brass Behemoth
  • Beasts of Nurgle: DoN, Daemonic, Poisoned Attacks, Random Attacks (D6+1), Regeneration

Two strong units, but in this matchup the Skullcrushers cruise to a deserving Massive Victory.

Each unit boasts an impressive array of attacks, each hits on 4's (Skullcrushers having the better WS, but the Beasts being -1 to hit) and both wound on 4's (S5 vs. T5 and S4 vs. T4). The Beasts benefit from having poison, but ultimately this contest was decided on saves. The Beasts' regeneration save is great, but the Skullcrusher's 1+ armour was proof against the S4 of the Beasts. Five sixths of the Beasts' offense simply evaporated on the mighty armour of the Skullcrushers. After that point, the Beasts just bleed away wounds due to Daemonic Instability.

That completes round 5. Each competitor has now fought 5 of their 15 matches.

Any shifting thoughts on the Beasts of Nurgle or the Skullcrushers?

Fine quality Chaos Dwarf Daemon Smithing!!

- How did the Witch Elves loose the first round to the Spider... Would they have lost if it weren't for the lack of wounds from the Spider.
Good outcome though.
4+ armour save of the Spider helps a lot against S3, non-poisoned attacks are neutralized by T6, plus the Witch Elves themselves have no defense at all!

What a grinding match, It took some time but the Beasties have finally lost some points.
If I am correct they just barely hang on to second place with the Witch Elves now on third :angelic:
It is possible... but the Witch Elves no easy fights left in the tournament. If they are to win, they'll have to earn it! They do control their own destiny at this point, but if they falter a unit like the Trolls or the Demigryphs could sail right past them.

@NIGHTBRINGER was this the same result with the Skullcrushers? I don't recall the fight lasting as long...
On the very first post of this thread I have created a complete hyper-linked index linking to each and every fight of the tournament. Any fight can be found in seconds.

End of round 13!

The most important note... we have an official tournament winner. The K'daai Destroyer has a attained a mathematically unassailable lead (unless an error is found in a previous match)!

Tournament Champion: K'daai Destroyer

Likewise, the Aracknarok is now officially our last place "winner". No combination of outcomes across the last two rounds can see it slip from the last place position.

Two rounds left to fight. There is a lot at stake for many of our contestants. Near the top and and bottom of the standings it is still possible for units to change positions drastically!
