Hello,

I wanted to make a small conversion chart to use your Lizardmen as Salamanders in KoW, just remeber that this is my personal choice of units, there are no rules here as long as the models represent the spirit of the unit, so here we go:

DIRECT EQUIVALENT:

Salamander Primes/Unblooded - Saurus Warriors
Ceremonial Guard - Saurus Warriors with Spears / Temple Guard
Ancients - Temple Guard / Saurus Warriors Painted to look like they are old
Kaisenor Lancers - Saurus Knights
Ghekkotah Warriors - Skinks (Javelins or Hand Weapons)
Ghekkotah Hunters - Skinks (blowpipes) / Chameleon Skinks
Ghekkotah Skyraiders - Terradon / Ripperdactyl Riders
Komodon - Slann Mage-Priest / Salamanders
Tyrants - Kroxigors (For the Horde I use 3 Kroxigors and 12 Skinks in classic formation)
Ember Sprites - Jungle Swarms
Ankylodon Battle Platform - Stegadon / Bastiladon
Lekelidon - Razordon
Fire Drake - Bastiladon / Carnosaur / Troglodon
Fire Elementals - Salamanders with handlers
Greater Fire Elemental - Slann Mage-Priest
Mage-Priest - Skink Priest / Saurus Conversion
Clan Lord on Fire Drake - Carnosaur / Troglodon
Clan Lord - Saurus Oldblood / Scar Veteran
Battle-Captain - Saurus Oldblood / Scar Veteran
Battle-Captain on Rhinosaur - Scar-Veteran/Oldblood on Carnosaur (Better the metal version)
Herald - Scar-Veteran/Oldblood with Battle Standard
Ghekkotah Clutch Warden - Skink Chief
Ghekkotah Skylord - Skink Chief on Terradon / Ripperdactyl

UNITS THAT REQUIRE SOME CONVERSION:

Corsairs - They are Saurus with Pistols (Saurus Pirates actually)
Ancients on Rhinosaur - They are Saurus on Dinosaurs bigger than the raptors but smaller than the Stegadon. They use 50x50 mm bases. You can just use a big unit of Saurus Knights though.

As you see a lot of units can represent more than one thing, that is because sadly Mantic decided to give the army a different look but the great thing is that as long as in the table there aren't two units that look the same are represent different things they don't mind what you put on the table. For example: you couldn't use two Slanns, one to represent a Komodon and one to represent a Greater Elemental.

Also, don't forget that you can use magic items to customize units, Terradons / Ripperdactyls are a good case in point, if you can use terradons to represent regular Skyriders and give the unit the Pipes of Terror (magic item that gives them the Brutal special rule) to represent Ripperdactyls, or don't, its your choice. Use your imagination to customize your own army and give it character.

Thanks for reading!

Nice conversion list. Not far off from what I had written for my units. The only difference in mine was I figured using the Salamander (rare) model from GW for Lekilodon and Razorbacks for Komodons

Problem is that the Komodon is supposed to be a BIG monster, it has height 4 that is as tall as a dragon but at the same time is not as strong or tough as a dragon so I figured that using slanns or the skink starseer was quite fitting.

The Slaan works for the Komodon. Just feels strange to use the model that way after what it used to do in 8th ed. If we had a Lord Kroak model, what would be the best conversion for him?

My plan is to just use it as another Komodon, or as they are quite different models, use the regular Slann as a Komodon and Kroak as a Greater Fire Elemental, there is no real confusion between both.

i like the idea of using the slann as a komodon. ive been using my bastiladon with the laser beam thingy(forget what its called lol) since its supposed to be height 4

Some suggestions that I have already made in other threads :

- the old saurus warriors from 5th edition (they came in plastic in the starter box, so lots are still available) make perfect unblooded, as they are slightly smaller than modern saurus while still having a coherent theme with them.

- Saurus corsairs could also be represented with javelins, as pistols are rulewise similar to throwing weapons with piercing(1), and salamanders should be strong enough to justify the piercing. This way if you want to keep your lizardmen army low tech theme you can still use corsairs. But of course who wouldn't like lizardmen with pistols ? :P

No the mage-priest is Saurus size really, so a slann won't fit. I stand by my words and say that the best place for him is as a Greater Fire Elemental or a Komodon.

Problem with the Komodon is that is a weak monster, I would say something like a very tall salamander really, the troglodon is just too big for me and looks too strong too. As there is no real equivalent I think that the slann or the starseer (What I use for them) fit rather well, a kind of tall thing throwing magic attacks, that is the best thing about KoW you can field anything you want as long as it fits with the spirit of the unit it represents.

Actually a scaled down troglodon would be just the perfect fit

Yeah I've got my book and trying to pin down converts is hard, I know what the problem is I'm too used to seeing GW models as what they are but once based for KOW that will change, luckly I have 99% of my models on Sq bases :)

Just don't forget that Razordons and Salamander, if you use them as unit that has the Monster type they MUST go in a 50x50 base instead of the usual 40x40 base that GW used to put with them. The same goes for the Skyriders and Skylord.

What I did was to order some custom cutted 40x40 to 50x50 mdf adaptators. Will take a picture and show them to you.

Here they are, they are laser cut and cheap.

Sadly he still doesn't have a web page, he does all by email and actually he lives quite near me. But if you are interested I can see if he would sell internationally, not sure though.

No problem, I can make some custom 50*50 bases (got loads of stuff lying around)

So far in my group, people haven't been as strict about the monster size bases due to the difficulty of finding 50x50 bases easily but future tournaments will enforce the base size rule so i'm looking into those bases as well. otherwise the only legal monster I have is the Ankylodon Battle Platform.

Remember that bases can always be bigger that the standard size, the problem is to use bases that are smaller than the real size of the unit.

So a Slanns can be a Mage-Priest, but it would be bad for you, that's the point.

Another option for a slann, like I suggested in another thread, is to use the profile of the mage hero from destiny of kings, he has a rather interesting twist to its magic making him special, ans as you said we can always use a bigger base if appropriate for the model.
