Here's the thing, I've read the new book and I think it's great. As far as Slann, Salamanders and JSOD, they are still viable choices in the new book.
First the Slann, cheaper, not a large target and the Disciplines are better than the generations. Knowing all 6 spells from any lore, adding an extra dice per spell, etc. The only thing the Slann is worse at now is ignoring mis-casts, but you get to re-roll on the miscast table, so no big deal.
Second, Salamanders. Sure they are 10 pts more expensive, but the skinks have a higher LD and don't get into combat, so no easy combat res for your enemy. Plus you can buy extra skinks for a higher unit strength. Besides, -3 to armour saves is HUGE, especially since Salamanders cause panic if their shooting causes 1 casualty. A unit of 2 Salamanders with 8 skink handlers is cheaper and can be just as effective as a current unit of 3 Salamanders with 9 handlers
If you just have to have Salamanders more like they use to be, use Razordons. Sure they have to roll to hit after rolling the artillery # of shots, but it's str 4 with no modifiers to hit. It's the same modifier to armour saves with an easier chance to wound. AND twice the number of shots to stand & shoot. Not a bad trade from the current Salamanders.
Third the JSOD, which stands for Jaguar Saurur of Doom (or Death), not Jaguar Saurus of Movement 9. The Jaguar charm is now better because you can charge in the magic phase AND leave combat if you need to. Last time I checked, moving 20" and never being march blocked is better than charging only 18". Sure it can be dispelled, but that just means we have to use up the opponents dispel dice first, a task that will be much easier will all the cool magic abilities we will now have. And the charm is NOT one use only, so we can use it all the time.
It sucks having to rearrange army lists, but I don't think we got weaker in any way. Point of fact is that the above 3 staples of many Lizardmen armies either got cheaper (Slann, JSOD) or more effective as small units (Salamanders) while still being really good units. This just leaves more points to spend on the units that got vastly improved (skink/krox units, stegadons, etc.)
