Today, I am cogitating.
If I wanted to create a sea-raider marauding force of Chaos Worshippers, what would be the best minis to use if I didn't want to spend a king's ransom on official Marauders (as nice as the new sculpts look to be)?
I've used Frostgrave barbarians, but I'm interested in variety... and while I have printed a Viking longship, I would rather not use actual Viking minis. I just find Vikings to be so utterly overdone in fiction (don't get me started on Space Wolves ¬_¬ ) - even if the Victrix Vikings are actually depicting them as they were, armoured and all, and not the stereotypical berserker appearance, the knowledge that they are Vikings may still annoy me.
Considering converting some Early Saxons for the task...
These look good, not sure how they look on the table.View attachment 168249These look good, not sure how they look on the table.
Especially for a mighty Tomb King!50, rookie age I know.
One might say that is a tad bit excessive. If only there was a god for that. There is no escape from Slaanesh, she marks us all. Welcome brother!Ooh, now there's a question. Hold on a sec...
Here's the Grand Total so far:
Total = 30
- Warhammer Fantasy: Dwarfs, Greenskins, Lizardmen, High Elves, Skaven and Beastmen = 6
- Warhammer 40,000: Tyranids, Orks, Chaos Space Marines, Dark Eldar, Necrons and a few Tactical Squads of Firstborn Space Marines = 6
- Middle-Earth (with the ultimate intention of using my collection in War of the Ring rather than the Strategy Battle Game): Khazad-Dum Dwarves, some unmade Knights of Rivendell, Moria Goblins, 'Mordor' Orcs that can be used in a number of factions and Uruk-Hai = Technically 5
- SPQR: Ancient Britons, Early Imperial Romans, and some unbuilt models planned for Ancient Greek and Slave Revolt armies = 4
- Dark Ages (Haven't decided which games to dedicate my force to yet): Romano-British/Welsh (One army planned to be used in both Arthurian and 'Viking Age' periods as the same sort of ethnicity) = Technically 1
- Star Wars - X-Wing: Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire = 2
- Star Trek - Attack Wing: One ship each from Federation and Klingons, 2 Romulan ships and 4 Dominion ships = 4
- Armoured Clash: Crown and Enlightened = 2

When I hear collectors asking the price I want for my old Legos I can't help but shake my head. I've had a few guys try and high pressure sales me for my castle and forest sets. Not for sale but thanks. Good luck on other people collecting.Contemplating my existence. What is my purpose in life? Why am I here? Do I really need more wargaming minis? Do I need to buy more Lego? How do I declutter my life without selling things I like? Who actually let the dogs out?
Actually, I know the answer to that last one, it was my father-in-law. He's always the one letting my mother-in-law's dogs out.
...and yes, I do need to buy more Lego, but from ebay...

Oh, and if anyone is bored: https://bsky.app/profile/tatterscrap.bsky.social
Today, I officially deem vol.1 of the Outland Legion finished. Time to take a break, refresh myself and refill the tanks, write a few other tales set in the same continuity (a chance to explore my Byzantine analogue in a short side-story perhaps... HMMMMM), and actually go into future ventures with more of a plan.

Ooh... that IS a contender. *Ponder Pose Activate* This looks like it is time for RESEARCH! XD
the ASOIAF models are pre-built so can't be made unique unless you pick up at least one other kit to kitbash with them. Additionally, they're a smidgeon on the tall side
One other suggestion I might add is Fireforge's Scandinavian Infantry:
These models are based on later Medieval Scandinavian troops after the 'Viking Age' entered its decline, so while there are still Viking helms and shields included in the kit, there are also more Medieval arms and armour, including kettle hats, pot helmets, some fun pointy helmets that nobody else in the Medieval era seemed to use, and some really nice, unique, quite sinister-looking scythe-like double-handed axes that would be excellent great weapons. They are more on the armoured side though, so they'd serve best as your Chaos Warrior equivalent rather than generic Marauders.
Other thoughts I had were Victrix's Early Saxons, which come in both armoured and unarmoured variants. Downside of Early Saxons, they don't seem to care for two-handed great weapons.
I've also looked at Victrix's Rus; who while there is a bit of overlap with their Vikings, also have some Eastern European elements.
I could also potentially go with both, and do some cross-pollination between the two. Or three, if I add the Fireforge Scandinavians... *Ponder Pose Activate* I suppose it comes down to how large a force I potentially want to go for this side-project.
I also briefly considered going outright barbarian with Gallic Warriors... and Gallic Naked Fanatics. Decided against that, because I really don't want to paint the gonads of 24 angry men XD But what an image that would have been if I brought them to the table. A longship at the beach, and out swarms a horde of literal naked men to wreck some shite.
I like those Fireforge models and I love Perry miniatures! I dislike the last edition chaos Marauder models mostly due to their uninspired head sculpts. I need to buy forty or so better heads and decapitate the ones I own now. This is a very useful conversation as I want 20 or so more to fill out the ranks. Of course I also want a Chaos Mammoth but who wouldn't?Yah, I was looking into that. It's hardly an instant disqualification, but typically I reserve taller than the norm for characters/champions so that they can stand out.
Ooh, that is a thought. Those war-scythes do look pretty gnarly. I'll add them to the list of potential options.

I'd love to get the old group together for a giant game. There were at least eight chaos mortal armies and twice that for empire. Having the points to field a good sized force and a mammoth would be a bucket list level day.i don't play WoC and even I would like a mammoth. Even if it cannot beat a Dread Saurian.![]()
The Dread Saurian reigns supreme!Even if it cannot beat a Dread Saurian.

I mean, I'm not about to sell most of my Lego, but... a $5 set from 1980 shouldn't be worth $50 now...that's just... insane...
I have most of the boxes and the outsides look good, so of course they want them. I get it but like with old minis the cost has become insane. If GW re-released the Dogs of War I would probably get a loan to finish up the units I'm missing. I won't spend $200 for Al-Muktars no matter how much I want more bodies for the basic five I already own. Same with old halflings or if I was offered the Mordheim Averland models with halberd.Yeah, I don't understand collectors. I've been picking up ebay Lego by waiting for auctions to almost end before making a minimum bid, or just doing a buy it now on stuff going for reasonable prices. There's a few sets I'm just buying key parts for from ebay and then ordering the others from Lego's pick-a-brick site or grabbing them from Bricks and Minifigures.
