In my opinion, this is the single biggest plot hole George Lucas made in the prequel trilogy.

Even if GL wanted his mom to die in Episode 2, he should have had Padme buy her freedom first.

Think of how it much more poignant it would be if Palpatine manipulated events so the Separatists killed Anakin's mother when she supposedly somewhere safe?
