In my opinion, the Oscars are no longer a meaningful barometer of artistic merit or commercial success, if it ever was.

I agree with some of the random movie nerds from Cracked.com

This will never happen but there idea is solid. In 2021, we need to look back at 2016 and figure out which movies were memorable and still relevant and give awards to those movies. In 2022 you cover the movies of 2017 and so and so forth.

But really the Oscars are really an excuse for Hollywood stars to wear fancy clothing, pose for cameras and have a soap box to spew political vitriol from.

Intriguing. I think you'd end up with better (more accurate/meaningful) results, but it would be harder to get people interested in watching an award show about movies that are 5 years old (not that many people watch the Oscars anyways).

It does have potential though. It would help focus on the quality of the movie without being swayed as much by the marketing, hype and newness factor.

Fewer people watch the Oscars every year, but people still check to see who won.

I figure this hypothetical award for movies five years hence would have a very simple ceremony and be mostly for bragging rights, not ceremony.

Edit: It doesn't have to be five years, but it should at least 2 years. Maybe four years and have the ceremony on February 28 or 29th and make a big deal every Leap Year with a bigger ceremony.
 
Not sure how many of them will be decent, but I'll at least give most of these a try (outside of Andor unless I hear absolutely spectacular things about it)...

Disappointed to hear you so negative about Andor, that's one of the ones I'm really looking forward to alongside Kenobi. Unless they ruin them they certainly look to be the best series of the lot and the ones with the most potential to continue proper Star Wars in a faithful and respectful way.

Mandalorian Series 3... I assume given Ahsoka's buggering off to her own series, she won't be blighting the Mandalorian anymore... I'll watch Series 1 when it arrives on DVD, and if it's decent I'll watch the next couple of series and try to stomach the Ahsoka cameo as best I can.

Book of Boba Fett... it'll probably redeem Boba for his pathetic appearances in the OT much like Vader's ineptitude was redeemed in Rogue One, and given it's set after his appearance in the Mandalorian it's logical to watch that as a sequel/spin-off.

I thought he was a boring character in Rogue One, I have no interest in watching an entire series about him.

Like usual, we have opposite interests. I'm much more interested in the Ahsoka series, especially with Thrawn on board!! Obviously I'll watch the Obi-Wan series and continue with the Mandalorian.
