Mantic have recently been working on their Chaos Dwarfs again, with a new set of elite infantry, which can be built as either hand weapon and shield-wielding Blacksouls or great-weapon-arrmed Decimators:

While not as professional as GW's stuff, I think they're sculpting is improving - these look pretty well proportioned, and very ornate as befits elite infantry.

They've also given them a howdah monster that wouldn't look too out-of-place as a K'Daai Destroyer:

what an amazing army…
they never gained the (quantity of) love they would have deserved.
it's a shame, they're one of the more interesting chaos races as they're one of the few to actually have a civilization and not just be hellbend on corrupting and/or torturing everything,

That one looks amazing.

Yeah, I'm not a Chaos player, but the more i know, the more i believe that CD would be the only Chaos faction that i would ever play.
Or Nurgle, because of the attitude "trust me, you're going to thank me for these blessings!"

They most certainly cannot!

At least give them credit for actually trying, and personally I don’t think they’ve done a bad job at modernising the original 80s Chaos Dwarf roster, as opposed to Legions of Azgorh which is a reworking of the faction with less variety (also they’re much more affordable en masse than Forge World).

I award no participation ribbons! :p

Especially considering that there are better alternatives (although still not better than Forge World's offerings)...

As for the price discrepancy between Mantic and Forge World, it is definitely very substantial. Everyone is entitled to their own preference, but personally I'd rather own one really beautiful model than ten not so beautiful models. Quality > Quantity

This is a reasoning that we can afford now.

Back in those days, when we were students and money were a problem, Mantic would have been the way to go.

I guess that comes down to personal preference. Even back in the day I would rather slowly build up an army that I find aesthetically pleasing than buy a heap of models that I don't care for. Mantic just doesn't do it for me. I don't like any of their sculpts. For me the quality > quantity equation has always held true, even when I was a student.

I see both the approaches as valid.
With my first dwarfs army, i picked a large amount of second hand mantic dwarfs for about 60 Euro (talking about something between 150-200 models). I knew they were suboptimal, but in that way i was able to play and experiment. Slowly, I replaced all of them with much more glorious proper GW dawi.
