AoS General's Handbook finally announced !!

Also keeps that unit from moving to a more strategic position to hit other targets, the only way they can move is if they retreat and then they can't shoot for that turn anyway.

That's very true, I'd not thought of that. My compromise would be preventing any model within a bubble (say 1/2" or 1") of any enemy model from using its ranged weapons, with exceptions on a per-model basis for some fancy vehicles like Kharadron Ships or Lizardmen Steggies or whatnot. I'd also prevent artillery crew locked in melee from being able to handle the artillery at all.

It does make them stronger, but points systems reflect this. Some people house rule that you can't shoot in combat, but really, you're making those units a lot weaker. Committing a unit to a melee fight makes perfect sense because often ranged units have a crap save, so you'll kill lots of them and then they won't be able to shoot as well in the next shooting phase if they can shoot at all! Also keeps that unit from moving to a more strategic position to hit other targets, the only way they can move is if they retreat and then they can't shoot for that turn anyway.

we play that you can shoot in combat, but only against the unit you're in melee with.

I totally agree. If a shooting unit had a great defensive and melee profile, it would op. But generally, a ranged and magic units attack a maximum of 5 times, compared to a melee squad that can attack up to 10 times in a single game, and usually with greater damage potential.

We still use Line of sight, but its usually obscurred by an engaging melee unit.

I feel the need to interject at this stage and say that this rule is a load of wank as it essentially makes ranged units stronger if they're engaged in melee combat, making the committing of a unit to a melee fight with a ranged unit a waste unless I'm missing something.

Well it will disappear soon as it got engaged anyway, range units can hardly do anything close combat so it seems fair

Stormforged judicators have nearly the same profile as liberators... Hell with the crossbows they're potentially more dangerous in melee while not all that much squishier (the only difference is the shield, and that's only a re-roll on 1's)

And that's why we hate Stormcast Eternals... our only ally.

There are some units that are clearly strong in both shooting/magic and combat and AFAIK they all got point increases this go around. Since I mostly play against my buddy's Sylvaneth I am most familiar with Kurnoth. They are indeed strong but a dedicated melee unit will still handle them decently well.

If I were to houserule shooting I'd do 40K style as several others here have done. I'd go with "units engaged in melee can only shoot at enemy units that have a model within 3" of the shooting unit and must select the closest enemy unit as the target." 40K pistols are modeled to work as an extra melee attack but given that melee range is shorter (1" versus 3") and the lack of weapon tags I'd go with the AoS ranges. This also allows for things like Skink screens to still protect your Kroxigor.

Does anyone understand the price increase of the old blood on foot. He went from 100 to 120 with a very poor offensive and defensive profile and the worst command ability in seraphon. His only saving grace is the rerolling wound rolls of 1 for MODELS within 5".

What am I missing?

damn just saw it was models within 5"
that makes it totally not worth it indeed. Only use is teleporting 40 saurus and using the command ability to get them 3'' closer

Is there a geberal handbook 2017 pdf file for me ro download? Due the book it will come to my country in couple weeks or maybe month

It wouldn't be legal to post a PDF of it, sorry.

But you can buy it as an eBook I think, using the app. Or a hardcopy from any online book store I guess.

And of course if you have specific questions we can answer those. Just ask. :)

That is indeed a very good question. I wasn't even using him at 100 points, just didn't really worth it. Can't even begin to think about it but maybe veterans somehow use it and I ignore it ? All of the changes were towards really good balance, so it's either a typo or we definitely are missing something !
