If you're anything like me then you've been wondering why GW uses a blue color scheme for the Lizardmen, with some exceptions (Slann, Chameleon Skinks, etc). I've been thinking for a while as to why that is, and here are some of my theories:

1 -- GW already has established that Goblins and Orcs are 'Greenskins'. Lizardmen are blue to establish that the two armies are not affiliated.

2 -- The Lizardfolk off of D&D are green. GW decided on a blue color scheme to be more individual from D&D.

Anyways, those are my ideas. Just thought I'd share them with you. If you have any other ideas, then feel free to share them as well.

Also, blue, green and brown where really the only options (the lizards had to be a 'defensive' colour not an 'aggressive' colour like red or yellow and couldn't be weird colours like purple and orange). Green is out because of Orcs and D&D and blue is more interesting then brown. So blue was chosen.

I actually prefer green, as you might have been able to tell from the colours I use on the site ;)

I think of them as being blue because they're kinda an alien race, so maybe it was to make look a little "alien" to the world.

My friend had a thought that maybe it was because they are cold blooded, hence blue blood.

fish are cold blooded but have red blood....

and slanns are alien to the planet... lizardmen were made on the planet to serve the slanns

but i prefer painting them green too since blue doesn't make much sense for camouflage in a jungle environment

yeah, i guess, but in most "fantasy" based fiction cold blooded is portrayed as "blue skinned"

Lizardmen were actually green in 5th edition and some of the new display models of the new range have also been painted green (eg kroxigors) so blue may have just been a 6th edition abomination, but i doubt we'll see the colour scheme change for the new book

Exactly, and I have continued to paint my 6th edition ones green as well.

I started to paint lizzardmen in 1998 I think( don't know what edition we ran then, but I know I painted my first regiments of saurus blue. Guess I just was visionary an ahead of GWs own staff ;)

lol nice. At first I didn't realize that the lizardmen were blue, just heard a bit of their storyline and liked the idea of bluey alieny lizards.

I think lizardmen are blue because nobody in the WH World loves them... if only they knew that they had such a following here with all of us! I'm sure they'd be giving up their blues then.

Alternatively they all just hold their breath a lot of the time?

I always ignore GW colour schemes - I don't pay them all that money just to be told what colour I can paint my own miniatures;)

Sell more blue paint maybe?

Going with Occom's razor on this one.
Funny as it sounds, this is probably the real reason. What else uses blue? I guess some armies can wear blue clothes, but you know... a race of all blue-skinned guys.

Well a lot of Ultramrines players buy tons of blue. ;)

But I think the blue color looks nice and is applied well. It looks cool when an army is arrayed together.

But my favorite color is red so I plan to base my lizard men, mainly the saurus under a breeding/fouding/hatching (did not know which was the right word) blessed by Sotek. It says the lizards under his blessing either have red skin, red scales, or red crests. Is it possible to paint the skin and scales red? I know since they are my models and I can do what I want with them, but is this fluff approved?

Chosen of Sotek

Considering Spawnings are gonna be gone next month I say no problemo. I was gonna paint mine different colors for each unit. Like I have 4 units of 20 Saurus and gonna paint each unit a different color scheme.... in theory depends on if I have enough paint for it lol.

Basically you paint your army in whatever colour you whant. GWs scheme is just a suggestion anyway, so if you like red, that shouldn't be a problem at all. Never heard that been a problem..
