8th Ed. whats good and whats not

Warriors have mages too, and their own natty combos
Shadows, with miasma, enfeebled and the withering with occurs mindrazorm
Never mind your T 8 they still wound on 2's
Point for point, they are worse basic than warriors,
And sure, against T3 they are awesome, but they don't hold up to really heavy infantry,
Or things with loads of I 3 attacks, I'm looking at you, horde of halbadiers,,,,,
Against great weapons? Or I1 then awesome, I'm right there with a halberd,

That's a great comparison - if you're using the temple guard like a hammer. Temple guard aren't pointed to go toe to toe with CC bad-asses and win.

They're pointed so you can hold when said bad-ass are kicking you trying to get your slann and you flank them with a stegadon. Temple guard, with Stubborn, ItP and Cold-Blooded are an anvil unit; comparing them to a hammer like chaos warriors is folly.
 
Minimum points cost for a unit of tg and a slaan is what? 430 points?
That's a naked slaan and 10 warriors,
Most uf us run 16? or so?
And a slaan rarely comes under 400 points

That's pushing 700 points.

In a unit that's not awesomely good in cc and only truely excels in the magic phase,

Yes, they are an awesome anvil, but it suffers from the all eggs in one basket problem,
If it gets into combat with 15 chaos warrios, and no help is forthcoming, they will all die,
It will take a few turns, but they will die.
While an ethereal slaan on his own costs about the same as one in a unit, and frees up almost 300 points for support, and can only be hurt by daemons and characters for the most part.

Temple guard are cool, but not as cool as when charging gave you striking first.

Except that the slann is easily broken in caught (Especially risky in a time where charges are random), and can be hurt by a multitude of different means - runic cannons, mages, daemons, forest spirits, ethereal creatures, characters...hell, I even think there's a terrain piece that gives you magic attacks.

I'm not saying that the lone slann is bad (he's really not), but I like the unit of temple guard to make sure that I at least get a look-out sir and also have something I can force my opponent to bottle-neck around to get to. Besides, with lore of life, I get to raise my dudes back from the dead. I'm sure my opponent would rather me have back some temple guard than give them T6 or regen.

Again, I feel like a quasi-unbreakable unit that hits back decently hard is something nice to have.

And their mages are much easier to kill off... I'll take TG/Slann any day of the week.
 
Okey, from reading this I guess TG is good in diffrent situations? Maybe not so good against WoC but good against s3 troops?
In my regular group I face Brets, Orcs, Dwarfs and Empire, we are expanding right now and both high elf and skaven would probaly join soon. Would TG be good against those armies?
Is it a valid tactic to try and hold a unit with TG's and then hit the flanks with cold ones?
 
Yeah! i think that would be a pretty sound strategy.

The key will be diverting the enemy so that they can't put pressure on you cavalry and block their flanks. A unit of saurus or a stegadon would also be a good choice to help flank.

I heard that some people don't like cold-ones anymore, is this true? Is it because of the "stike in initiative order" thing? I guess they also took a hit by the general cavalry nerf but can you make them effektive?
 
Temple Guard with a Life augment spell (and maybe Razor standard for good measure) will walk through Chaos Warriors like they were preschoolers with Nerf weapons. My brother plays WoC religiously, and he described my new Slann/ TG block as "More Irritating than Teclis."

I believe that is saying something.
 
I have been running temple guard for first time in several editions and I can see the problem with them, however with life they are VERY good (4+ regen, T8 etc). I do find them very easy to overcommit though and it gets a bit "seat of the pants" when the slann ends of in the from rank.....

Ive found the slann safer there for the first time in ages - it doesnt mean though that I go back to running him solo once I REALLY understand this edition in terms of metagame and redirecting strategies.

I am yet to play against WoC yet in the new Ed, my first 8/9 games have missed them but the infantry on saurus match up would worry me if they can neuter my steg and support. They might not like my 4 (2x2) salas tho...

As always with lizards I think it will be how you use your support to whittle their units down.
