8th Ed. What do I do with flying Chiefs?

Hi guys,

I’m reworking my army list to include some flying goodness. Being a “collector” more than a gamer I’m planning on having 2 units of 3 terradons (one with bolas for no other reason than they look awesome) and a unit of 3 rippers.

I also want to get another box to make Tiqtaq’to (again, looks awesome) and two chiefs. Problem is I have no idea how to gear out chiefs on fliers! There’s plenty on the forums about how to use units of Rippers and Terradons, but I can’t seem to find much about our little chiefs. So here I am, humbly asking for your opinions and experiences on:

• Which mount should I use, Ripper or Terra?
• What mundane equipment have you used and why?
• Do you use any magic items? Which ones and why? (Chiefs being so flimsy I don’t really see the point in spending a bunch of points on magic items, but I’m very new!)
• What role does your flying chief play?

It depends on what you want them to do, surprise

But I agree you should keep them fairly cheap. Light armour, shield and spear/blowpipe and some magic armor to get 2+ save.

1st: spear/blowpipe, light armour, shield, dragon helm.
2nd: spear/blowpipe, light armour, enchanted shield.
3rd: same, with gambler's armour.

All is around 100 pts, and quite capable to kill chaff. I think terradons is better, since they can opt to flee and drop rocks and is more reliable since they don't have frenzy, but rippers are cooler and of course better in close combat.

One use items like the Charmed Shield, Opal Amulet, Egg of Quango, and Potion of Strength are also good (obviously not all at once).
