The stupid GW water effects ruined it. It dried "scaly" on top, even though I made sure to only pour a very thin layer (1-2mm) and left it undisturbed to dry for 48+ hours.How, what's happened?

That's definitely a possibility.It has a scaly effect, right?
How about paint it brown to make it a dessiccated mud pool?
