Was just wondering if anyone here is actually planning on using the Troglodon in their army?

If so, what role can you see it playing to make it worth the point cost? :P
 
I'm going to try out a Troglodon tomorrow.

I plan to keep him behind my Stegadon/Slann/TG/Bastilidon block and use him for the following things:

1) Roar when necessary
2) Eyes in the back of the Slanns head to blast away any fast cav/cowboys that comes up behind me
3) Charge said fast cav/cowboys that aren't being dissuaded by magic (or if the winds aren't blowing in my favor)
4) Add an extra channelling die (I'll have 5 dice with +1 on 3 of them and saving 1 dispel die per turn, so I think I'll be making up for not having Rumination)
5) Run up the flank real quick to give the Slann some extra range for some spell
6) Flank charging whatever my TG get engaged with if it lasts to a 2nd/3rd round of combat (probably an unlikely use ... more likely he will go on ahead so the slann can shoot magic missiles in the backfield)

I think of the Troglodon as a Skink Priest that has 1 spell (the roar) that is 1 use only, but can't be dispelled. Also, instead of being a weak little skink he is a terror causing T5 W5 with 3 S5 poison attacks and Predatory Fighter and a thunderstomp plus a shooting attack that is very similar to the old Staff of the Lost Sun. Oh yeah, and it also gets an extra WS2, S3 attack too (almost as exciting as the Slann taking his attack from behind the Temple Guard)

So, he's not exactly a "wizard" ... I never really cast anything with my priests anyways. This guy and my Bastilidon are going to keep my Temple Guard on point and not let any annoying little units get in its way from killing what I want it to kill.
 
I think I'll use a troglodon no matter what.

The overall power level has taken a hit, so if I want something more powerful and efficient and I can go for other armies. But the new models are just too nice not to use.
 
I got two of the new Carnosaur kit but made them both into Carnosaurs. Maybe I'll use the old one as a trog.

Yeah, I think I'll be using one too in all honesty. It's just too cool not to have on the table!

It would be good for it to actually make up for its point cost though as well as looking fantastically evil :P

Also, is it true that the skink oracle can be used by the slann to channel spells?
 
Yes it can be used to cast spells through, it has the arcane vassal special rule.
 
It really can be a versatile unit...

Roar Buff (Though, only one use)

Magic Phase Buff, (With Item upgrade)

Magic Extension Cord for the Slann (There's one for ya' BoB)
 
I'm not so convinced by it to purchase on anytime soon, however I do love the model so I'll undoubtedly get one eventually. Despite it being a little lacking, I'm not disappointed so much by what I see: your paying a decent degree of versatility.

Ranged attack. Probably wont be in range of anything essential turn 1. And thereafter will most likely hit on 5s. Its almost worse than Razordons shooting.

Great attacks. 3 ws 3 attacks? How is this great for 200 pts?=p

Roar buff. The buff is medioker at best.

Magic phase buff. 25 pts for a channeling chance.

Im sorry but I would take a Giant over this guy any day=p

Maybe if you charge as fast as you can towards the enemy in hope that his Terror breaks his whole army. But thats about the best use I can see for him=p
 
Troglodon has the poisoned attacks special rule, so he gets both poisoned shooting and close combat attacks as stated in the BRB. IMHO that's why poisoned attacks rule isn't specified in his ranged attack special rule.
So one ranged poisoned attack 1d3w, quick to fire, can shoot in a range of 25", that's not overpower but still pretty cool
 
i try ed one out tonight it was lack luster i was playing WOC there was never a combat i wanted it in that it could have won even with help the arcane vassal was nice but a skink priest does the job better
 
I love the model, the spine and head are spot on, its let down massively by the goofy looking rider, which is the main reason I made mine up as a Carnosaur. I truth neither the trog nor the carnie are exactly optimal, but I think bringing the trog ally does hobble you in terms of effectiveness because it means you can take one less ancient steg, which are far and away the best unit in the book.
 
For those with the box, is it possible to make a troglodon riding scarvet? :pompus: If so, that's my answer(the carnausaur head looks a little goofy to me)

You could as long as you give it the carnie back spikes and not the trog's sail (the Saurus saddle won't fit with the sail) and as long as you don't mind the rider looking in a completely different direction to his mount (the trog head bends to the right while the carnie head bends left). I've got to say I like the carnosaur head much, much better having out the kit together than I did from the pictures in WD or even the 360 on the net.

It would actually be quite easy to magnetise the heads so they were interchangeable and the Saurus saddle is quite stable without gluing it on, I've left mine removable so I can use the carnie for SoM games.
 
I feel like they overpriced the Trog by about 50pts. If the Oracle was actually a Level 1 Wizard, I would understand why he's that price, but he does is that chancy channeling.

The roar is going to be most useful in Saurus heavy armies, ie double Slann with TG+two Saurus blocks bulking out. In a Monster Mash list you'd rather get Ancients, Stegs or Bastilodons.

The shooting attack is pathetic. It should be Multiple Shots or a template, it makes zero sense why such an expensive monster has such a weak ranged attack.

I don't understand why they took away the Multiple Wound rules and gave him Poison. He's a giant croc-raptor beast, why the hell would he need it? Oh right, because they nerfed the Strength down to 5 as well. When you compare the Trog with a Carnosaur, its just painful.


We have better monster options across the army book. Predatory Fighters is a cornercase ability, its nice when it procs but its not something to invest 200+ points into buffing. Pass (although full marks for originality and cool factor).
 
Yeah, I have to say that I see uses for just about every unit in this book... but the Troglodon is just bad. I come from Beastmen - it's not as bad as our monsters, but that's only because it's less expensive.

What's worse, it's in rares with salamanders, and steg ancients (and even razordons).

I hear you...have my first LM 8th game today and made a list last night..

Troglodon is the new 7th Carnosaur= I really wanna use it but cant justify it in any way when I look what 100skaven (remember not to use points guys!) slaves could have gotten me -.-

What you say is true, and I did use some "flowery" language, but he's a support "Jack-of-all-Trade-Master-of-None." He's not going to be a Killy Cowboy or anything, but he's a rounded unit. As Norman says, your paying for versatility.

Honestly? After everything is said and done? He'll really only be viable in larger games.
