I'm going to try to paint my movement tray with magnetic paint, I have seen people use it and rare earth magnets together to great success, then the same deal with the bottom of the tray and a bit rubbermaid bin and I think I might have a fairly cheap case that will make deploying a breeze.

You know, I didn't know they made magnetic paint. I'll be.

Although looking at a description of it on RustOleums site it sounds more like the paint attracts magnets. I wonder if the paint has some sort of ferrous material suspended in the paint? Sorry, that is getting off topic, but you inadvertently awoke my inner Scientist/Engineer now I must find out how it works.

Yeah I am 99% sure it has paramagnetic nanoparticles suspended in it, possibly harvested from ferrofluids. And if you haven't heard of liquid magnets (ferrofluids), look them up, they are awesome fun! I did an experiment with them last year at uni.

If people have used magnetic paint successfully it is a viable option. My only concern with it would be the bond between paint and surface would need to be stronger than the magnetic attraction between paint and rare earth magnets, otherwise when you tried to pull them apart the paint would just come off.. It might also be pretty thick, definitely worth looking into though.

They do have a ferrous material, to attract the magnets. The trick I see to keep the paint form coming up will be to let it fully dry, and then painting over it with a thin layer of another paint, or possibly sealing it. I'm going to try it, because if it doesn't work I can just use some thin magnet sheets, and let my wife have the paint to play with an area of a wall in our house, which I'm sure will make her happy.
