The Ultimate Childhood Thread

Due to the vast amount of my television viewing time as a 90s kid consisting of TVO, Discovery and History:

Magic School Bus
Bill Nye the Science Guy
Arthur
Turning Points in History
Daily Planet

On top of that, I picked up the first season of Pokémon and a little bit of early Digimon, although I didn't really care for the latter all that much.

I was a Steve Irwin Crocodile hunter kid growing up
To some extent, so was I. It would have been very unpatriotic if I hadn't owned one of those DVDs...

Some of my favourites when I was older include:

Raven
Redwall
Horrible Histories
Merlin

Horrible Histories! Merlin! Mainly because the ABC doesn't seem to make that kind of children's programs, so we stole them from other places...

Personal favourites from when I was younger are probably Hairy Maclary, Maisy Mouse, Power Rangers (specifically any of the dinosaur ones), shaun the sheep is still a favourite (still quite near Wallace and Gromit), Dr Who, etc. :p

My brother and I just seemed to find any Dinosaur DVDs we could get our hands on, normally documentaries. A mix of Walking with Dinosaurs/beasts/monsters and the Land before time :D

Dino thunder fan as well?!

I seem to have some vague memories about a TV programme featuring Maisy Mouse, although it must have been on when I was very little and not shown again since because those memories are vague.

Shaun the Sheep was another of my favourites - loved the film of it they released recently.

Again, that was me also - I loved the Walking with series - I have them all on DVD still - and the Land Before Time films were some of my favourites when I was little. I discovered Beasts and Monsters by watching them on what was UKTV History (when ‘natural history’ was natural history and not just a history of programmes about present day wildlife), and got them on DVD alongside dinosaurs. I also have Walking with Cavemen as well, a little-known one presented by Professor Lord Robert Winston that chartered how Homo sapiens survived when all other human species died out.

Goldorak, always watched it at my granny's
Colt sievers
Knight rider
Löwenzahn
Am dam des
Any cartoons, mostly bugs bunny, tom and jerry, grisu...

Hell. I could have learned eight languages instead....

And while most kids my age were watching stuff like football programmes and that sort, I was watching historical documentaries like Battlefield Britain and Terry Jones’ Barbarians (the days of UKTV History, ah those memories...)

And all of this came before I was a sci-fi fan (which started when I was first shown Star Wars Episode 1 when I was 12 and was swiftly followed by Episodes 2-6 and then Star Trek TNG, TOS, DS9 and Voyager, Battlestar Galactica and a lot more recently Alien and Predator).

I have every eposide of Merlin recorded on my box

I have all 5 series on DVD! Great series.

I also have series 1 of Atlantis, the Greek mythology series the producers made after Merlin finished. Real shame to see it get cancelled after Series 2, probably to make way for yet more Doctor Who. :(

Good ones!
Especially Löwenzahn is just legendary.

one of my favorite bits from Bill Nye the Science Guy.

Been watching the second series of the new Raven of late - I simply love it how they’ve not simply done a complete reboot, but included aspects of the original series in there to tie it in, so that the new series is more of a sequel to the original, such as including many challenges that appeared in the original (not least including the famous Leap of Faith and the Last Stand) and also having little story moments where the new Raven summons the original Raven to advise her on where to go next - they’re real Jedi Master-Padawan moments that really flesh out the story side and make it a treat for fans of the original series to watch. In fact it continues the series numbers after those of the original series, so while the original series was series 1-10, the new series has become series 11-12.

It’s great too that the second series of the new series has come in - the first series of a new programme is always the most difficult as you’re on tenterhooks to see if it becomes popular enough with fans for a second series to be worth making, especially as this one was following on from an original series that had a huge cult following, at least in Britain anyway. Thankfully the new Raven series has evidently passed this test as the second series is being shown on CBBC right now.

Would highly recommend the new series to all fans of the original Raven series!

On a side note, it’s a good job they’re showing and repeating it as it’s one of the very few programmes on CBBC nowadays worth watching, alongside Horrible Histories when it’s from the original 5 series and Dragons: Riders of Berk. All the rest of what they show now is garbage in my view, to be frank, especially compared to some of the greats from when I was younger:

Ed and Oucho’s Excellent Inventions
Badger and Badger (R.I.P. Andy Cunningham)
Bear Behaving Badly
Basil’s Game Show
The original late 90s Dennis the Menace and Gnasher series (the 2000s series they later showed was pretty bad compared to it, but even that was OK compared to the Hell Pit Abomination they’ve cooked up now)
50/50
Trapped

And many many more!

He man. Specifically skeletor and the immortal phrase "By the power of GREYSKULL!"

Heman was great! It didn't really last though. Overall, I probably spent more time playing with my GIJoes or on the computer.

Does anyone remember Komander Keen? You had to fight aliens to rescue your babysitter.

Has anyone else seen the Netflix show, the toys that made us? There's a episode on He-Man. It brought back a lot of memories.

Inspired by some posts in Just For Laughs, I've created this thread where we can share everything that was great about our childhoods, where we can share our favourite things, reminisce about ages past and put up videos of all the best bits. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes up, as most of our forumites are of differing age groups and generations, so it should be interesting to see what appears. Also those forumites who are still children, by all means post your favourite things in here too - you can share what the latest generation has to offer!

First category then - Favourite TV Programmes! What were your fave shows when you were a child?

Here's a portion of my list:
Thomas the Tank Engine (the originals of course - this is one situation where I think the originals are the best)
Postman Pat (Again, the originals)
Bill and Ben (I was born far too late to see the original version of this one but at around this point they made a new series which retained the charm of the original yet expanded the setting, with all sorts of little animals living in the garden alongside the main characters)
Andy Pandy (Same as above)
Come Outside (Featuring Nurse Gladys Emmanuel from Open All Hours, this one was great at giving youngsters an inside look at how things were made)
Fourways Farm (A little-known programme that featured puppet farm animals exploring simple scientific processes)

These are just some of my favourites from when I was little - what have YOU got to share?

Noooooooooo why oh why did you mention four ways bloody farm!
My little brother was obsessed with that damn programme.

And now all my brain can think is;

‘There’s a dog and a cat, a great big horse and three bad rats dum dum dum dum on four ways farm’ and so on lol

Let us not forget these god like shows, along with many many other such as;
-Mighty max,
-Zig and zag!
-goose bumps
-dungeons and dragons

The list goes on :D

Flapjacks

Courage the Cowardly Dog

Flintstones and the Jetsons

Avatar The Last Airbender

Invader Zim (a dark and gritty cartoon created for kids, i likey!)

The Fairly Odd Parents

Ed, Edd n Eddy

Just to let you know, I created this thread specifically for forumites to share their favourite childhood programmes and stuff, not to act as a battleground for forumites to vent their grievances against other people’s favourite shows. Sorry if I sound harsh but I just want to make this clear.
