I don't see them doing well against Switzerland. Maybe they can grab some points off of Qatar. The winner of the play-off will be crucial for their chances. Historically though Canada stinks at the world cup. Now if it were on ice with skates :p

Typically Canada is actually lower on the teams I cheer for in terms of the World Cup. I'd rather see Hungary (already eliminated) or Argentina (because of Messi) win before them. I would also like to see Norway make some sort of impact, although I don't think I could cheer for them over Canada (even though they would likely pound Canada).

Netherlands shouldn't have too much difficulty making it through. No? Especially as eight of the third place teams move on anyways in the new expanded format.

Interesting. Why the interest in Hungary? There have been some real good Hungarian players over the years.

The Netherlands has a good selection this time around, good players, but more important good teamwork. I am not saying it will be like South Africa 2010, but I have high hopes ;)

That's my background. I was born in Canada, but both my parents are from Hungary.

Puskas is certainly the greatest of all the Hungarian players. The best goal of the year wins the Puskas trophy, so there is definitely something to him. There was a point in time where he was arguably the very best player in the world.

In terms of tiers, I'd put him in "S" tier, though I do have a couple of tiers above "S"

Messi tier (better than god tier) - Messi
God tier - Maradona, Pele, Ronaldo
S tier - Puskas goes here along with a whole bunch of other all time greats.


That said, there have been many great Hungarian players, just they're all from quite a long time ago. Check out the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) and Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF) lists of Football players with 500 or more career goals. The lists are littered with Hungarian players.

The "Magical Magyars" of the 1950's were the most dominant team of their era. Sadly, they lost in the biggest game where it mattered the most (1954 WC finals), but that doesn't change what they did. They were feared and still hold records to this day. Sadly the side was prematurely broken up because of the Hungarian revolution of 1956.


Today, Hungarian football is a pathetic shadow of what they used to be. Our current day best player is Dominik Szoboszlai, we'll see what he can do for the team as his career unfolds.
