With Warhammer - The Old World just around the corner (3-4 years ;)), I thought it would be fun to explore what time setting people would most enjoy for the new game. You never know, Games Workshop might be reading and taking notes
(they're not)
.

In any event, vote in the poll and discuss what timeline would be best for Warhammer TOW when it comes out... and why? Also, which do you think GW might opt for?

Cheers,

Time of legends would be cool, but I think it will be most likely that they go back to what they know, that being pre end times Fantasy. It will be kind off weird though, knowing what will happen to everyone, so maybe they go to Legends? I think anything linked to the end times is highly unlikely.

My top pick goes to what I feel is actually the least likely option.... Post End Times (End Times retconned to have never happened).

I wasn't a fan of the End Times, and in this scenario they could actually progress the WFB without it already having a pre-determined end. However, as I said, I can't see GW ever choosing this option because the End Times is also tied into AoS lore. As such, I don't believe they will retconn it.

As a second choice I'd take During the time of non-End Times 8th edition WFB. Can't go wrong with the good old trusty 8th edition time line, but as @airjamy says, it would be strange already knowing the fate of all the characters.

The time of legends could be fun, but then some of armies would lose a lot of their special characters from 8th edition (Empire, Dwarfs, Ogres, etc.) because they weren't born yet. Also, how far you go back in time will have an effect on Tomb Kings and Vampire Counts as they weren't always undead. A tricky but interesting option.

What I would least like to see is everything taking place during the End Times.

I would honestly love it if it was set in 'post End Times where the End Times never happened' because all the overpowered rubbish that came with it would disappear, but I certainly don't think this is likely as GW still referred to how Archaon destroyed the Old World in the announcement article on Warhammer Community, meaning they're likely going to keep that all in the storyline.

Therefore, I voted 'During the time of non-End Times Warhammer Fantasy', as it is the one of the two most likely outcomes that I most certainly prefer - I have always enjoyed Warhammer Fantasy as it was, before all the the silly lore changes and massive, overpowered stuff that came with the End Times, and setting it at this time would avoid that stuff coming into it without going so far as retconning Skeletal Pope Nagash and the other End Times stuff that GW have grown to like (he just won't be present in the game as he hadn't arisen yet). Also this is the time period that Warhammer: Total War 1 and 2 are set in, and if it's going to be designed to appeal to the Warhammer: Total War players, it would make the most sense that it would be set around this time.

Time of Legends would certainly be fun because you could have armies like human Nehekharans and young Nagash's undead, but at the same time as @NIGHTBRINGER says, you would lose many characters of the younger races, possibly even some of the younger races themselves if you go particularly far back in time. Time of Legends would also look pretty different to Warhammer: Total War and would not be as attractive to that potential playerbase (one of the two that GW are trying to attract with this). However, this would allow new characters to come to the fore with profiles for the first time (Alcadizaar the Conqueror for Nehekharans, Gotrek Starbreaker for the Dwarfs, e.t.c).

Also @NIGHTBRINGER, you might want to change the thread title from 'The Old Word' to 'The Old World'! :p

Good catch! Fixed.

you could have armies like human Nehekharans
But it would invalidated the current Tomb King models. I wouldn't want to field an army of human Nehekharans!

Very true!

Time of Legends is the only option that would not be able to take maximal advantage of this. I still think that post End Times (with retconn) could work because time wise, it could occur just a couple of years after the time of 8th edition WFB (so same characters and same setting, but the End Times were thwarted). The Total War market is huge, and GW should definitely work towards bringing that crowd in.

I voted during the End times simply because i would really like GW to revist the books and do them properly. It is known that the books were all in production at the same time and the authors didn't work toghether all that much during their creation. So if a large scale retcon/re-writing of that series that would expand on the different parts of the warhammer world and characters that met unworthy ends or were just straight up forgotten (poor Skarsnik).

My next choice would be prior to End Times because i am sure the Warhammer world still have plenty of stories, characters and all manner of monsters that don't require an end of the world scenario to be told about. Also this is the timeframe where most new model releases would work in, since a large chunk of exisiting models wouldn't be present in other time periods.

What? Not even with Alcadizaar the Conqueror ruining Nagash’s entire career?

I mean, they’re still Tomb Kings, just living, and you could still play Tomb Kings proper in 8th Edition.

In any case, as I’ve said before, Time of Legends is unlikely if GW want to attract the Warhammer: Total War players, and I’m pretty sure that’s the main reason they’re doing this in the first place.

It's a great story, but the fact remains that I like Egyptian Undead. A living Nehekharan army would look nothing like a Tomb Kings army. The army would be composed of entirely new models and I wouldn't get to field any of the Tomb Kings models that I love. The closest thing I have to a human faction are the WoC. That is enough and is the reason I have no interest in collecting Empire or Bretonnia.

If my armies don't transfer over, it is highly unlikely that I would adopt TOW.

That is true!

I don't know that much about Lizardmen lore TBH.... is there a forum on here that has a comprehensive timeline with really basic information about them? I'd love to know more, but I'm not sure where to start

Note: I've been collecting Lizardmen for about 12 years now. I'm not very good at AoS, but I absolutely LOVE the modeling side of the hobby

I gave my vote to Time of legends. So many interesting events… it would be like to experience in first person all the fluff of WHFB

Do you have a specific event/time in mind? Rise of Nagash? War of the beard? etc.

here you go a collection of all the lizardmen lore in chronological order https://warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Lizardmen

I voted 'other' because I'd want them to not just choose one specific moment in time, but rather have multiple, that is 'time of Legends', Just prior to end times, and if End times is still a thing, then that too or whatever would be in its place along with more, like the first time Chaos invaded.

That is an interesting idea. How would that work for special characters, as their power levels might change over time (and some only exist at certain points in time)? Would they have separate rules based on the time the game is taking place?

What about armies that may not have existed during the time of the first Chaos incursion?

I think that's actually more of a chance than anything else. They can begin with a small subset of armies and then expand. If they pick a point far in the past for their first releases there will be only a handful races. Elves, Lizardmen, Dark Elves and Daemons, I guess.
Or what else is that old?

Edit:
And later they can revisit other times, and release or re-release armies that fought during those.

That is a risky idea in my mind. There will be a great deal of excitement at launch, and opening with so few armies might turn away many players that are devotees of armies that aren't represented. It also creates unnecessary inconsistencies between TOW and Total War: Warhammer, which will make it harder to pull new players from that lucrative market.

Or what else is that old?
That is a good question, I'd have to go back through all the 8th edition timelines to figure that out.

For special characters you would either have to pick a period your army is from and that then comes with certain SP or have base rules for all of them and have some additional ones for certain scenarios.
Or you could just make special characters more upgrade-able so you can freely choose your power level.

Regarding armies not existing: I guess I'm a bit biased there, so I wouldn't mind much if not all races were there at all time periods, since Lizardmen would always be, but that probably would not go down to well, so you should still be able to play them, maybe they just have certain restrictions while playing a certain time period or they would make new factions, say Empire before the actually became the empire, which could give more varied human factions. I'd also like to see Lizardmen from the Southlands for instance.
