Midnight's Edge is a bit dry and humorless but they are fairly factual.


A few things in this video make Amazon's actions make more sense financially.

1) Amazon only owns the rights to Tolkien's addendums, not the Hobbit or LOTR. I'm not sure about the Simirilian.

This partially explains why they are working in such a small space and are not shy of rewriting it. They have to rewrite it so the historical events happen in a shorter time frame so their human characters don't age and die to be replaced by new characters next season.

2) Amazon is likely trying to buy the rights to The Hobbit and LOTR.

3) Amazon is not trying to make this a prequel to Peter Jackson's movies.

Either they want to buy the rights to LOTR and make their own OR they will fail to buy LOTR. But either way, they have no incentive to make their series mesh with Peter Jackson's LOTR. Which sidesteps of question. "Okay, if it's the same universe, how come the past had a bunch of black dwarves, elves, and hobbits and the LOTR didn't? Was there some secret color specific genocide?"

4) Jeff Bezos is claiming to be a big LOTR fan.

Some are saying he is lying for marketing purposes. But I don't think he's lying. Years ago I spoke with an accountant for a professional sport franchise. He said some people buy a team as an investment and others are just rich people who like to say "I own the insert team here." The latter are not trying to make money, just break even. Note, most of the sport's team that consistently are in the running for championships are run like a money making business, not as a hobby.

Hypothetically, if you gave me an obscene amount of money and I was required to spend it on something selfish, I wouldn't buy a giant mansion or a fleet of yachts, I would bankroll vanity media projects.

I think Jeff Bezos wants to own Tolkien's work the way other rich people want to own a professional sport's team.

Like most sport's team owners, his net worth is so high that he doesn't need it to make money.

And that is what makes him dangerous. He is largely immune to boycotts and backlash... but we will meet him battle none the less!

I feel bad for hardcore fans of LOTR, they're about to see their beloved franchise undergo the same sort of prison-style sodomization as Star Wars fans did. In the end though, they couldn't get rid of WFB, real Star Wars or real Star Trek. Real LOTR will always exist and people can simply avoid the fake stuff being churned out by the talentless woke activists. And in the meantime we can still derive joy from complaining about it and warm ourselves by the Amazon "LOTR" dumpster fire as it burns.

It's a shame though that we won't have access to any third party financial numbers (ticket sales, tv viewership, etc.). It will all be part of Amazon's internal analytics, so anything released will be done at their discretion and with their spin on it.

I don't believe I have been remotely tempted to watch Showtime in the last fifteen years. I cannot boycott something I wasn't going to buy anyway.

Side note, I don't like Ryan Kinel's presentation style, even when I agree with his points.

What I do like about him is that his videos are usually more concise. He delivers the information I want in about half the time as some of the others. For example, another channel like Clownfish TV, while coming off as a bit more polished, often feel a bit longwinded. It will take them 20 minutes to deliver what RK will do in 8-10 minutes. Nothing wrong with either one, just personal preferences. Personally I like Jeremy from Geeks & Gamers more (I like his style of anger/rage) than RK... while the Drinker is probably the best of the lot.

I agree that Critical Drinker is my favorite. His work seems scripted and rehearsed.

I don't mind Jeremy from Geeks and Gamers but I don't like to listen to angry nerds for long periods of time. Overlord DVD claims to be angry, but I don't smell the vitriol that Jeremy has. I too wish Clownfish TV was a little more succinct but I like their casual style.

I often have Clownfish TV as background noise. I try to limit myself to one or two angry rant videos a day. Ideally without excessive swearing.

In most cases I listen to videos without watching them, and I nearly always watch at accelerated speed. Though with Critical Drinker, I usually listen to at normal speed as a sign of respect.

I regularly watch Thatumbrellaguy for updates on Amber Heard's court drama. Domestic abuse is a terrible thing even when a woman is hitting a man. It's even worse when a woman hits a man than tries to make the victim the bad guy.

Honest question, but doesn't consuming that much content, driven by your own admission an "angry" rhetoric, just kinda bum you out?

Maybe it's why so much of my argumentation on this thread has been around the direction of the criticism, but I find the media (from both sides) that constantly pushes this outrage/anger culture down our throats to be unbearable to listen to. It's not even that i'd rather put my head in the sand... I allow my purchasing decisions (and to a lesser extent, what i choose to spend my time on for those passive advertising dollars) to go towards things i enjoy. Feels like it probably has more of an impact and allows me to separate myself from the constant negativity.

I dunno, I just know i've personally felt a shift in my mood when my content consumption starts to lean overly negative. Kinda paints everything in a shade of rage or judgement that isn't necessarily there otherwise.

Could definitely be just me tho, why i'm curious :)
 
"Everything is gonna be..." reminds me a lot of the first Jurassic Park. When the paleontologists need to immerse their whole arms in the big pile of dinosaur's crap to find the poisonous berries. Here i was, diving in that pile of crap and finding a solid core of ignorance and racism against white people.

Not only does this mean that white people can never be the targets of racism. This also means, that the CCP's discrimination against foreigners in general, Africans, and ethnic minorities within China are not actually racist because this sort of discrimination does not help white people. If anything you can call it social justice because the CCPs action inconvenience white people in the free world.

This also means that if hypothetically Asian and Black people attacked each other on the basis of race, that would also not be racist because white people are not involved.


The Anti-Defamation League is now essentially a pro-defamation league in a very Orwellian sense where the Ministry of Peace foments war, the Ministry of Love spreads hate and the Ministry of Truth spins lies.
 
About the upcoming Amazon LotR show; Either on this forum, or in one of the videos linked here, someone talks about all of the new characters being a bad thing b/c Tolkien already created plenty. I think I would rather Amazon used primarily "original" characters, just so there wouldn't be any entangling with established characters and their storylines/backstories (as they've decided to do). Have these landmark characters like Galadriel, Elrond, Gil-galad, etc. as presences in the show to help connect it to Middle Earth, but then go crazy with some pseudo-LotR story of your own with characters of your own.

In some way, I see that as part of the success of The Mandalorian. Screenwriting, and whether you think it's good, aside, my point is that it doesn't focus on Luke, Han, Leia, etc. Obviously, those character exist and are present, but the show isn't about them. There is a certain freedom in "playing" in the Star Wars universe. EDIT: It also might be one of the reasons why Book of Boba Fett didn't go over as well, since he is an established character from the OT/PT/Clone Wars.

I'm a little surprised that Amazon didn't try for a Silmarillion show. I know it's an odd book, in it's way, but it could be very dramatic, melodramatic and episodic. I imagine the religious and/or supernatural themes are too extreme for a "standard" viewer? It might be a little too weird b/c it would be all elves and angels.

I don't know, I might be off base, but that was just one of my thoughts.

That's true in the sense that they weren't faithful to a pre-existing fan favourite character, which definitely resulted in at least some of its received backlash. As you suggest, if they wanted to go along a completely different path, they should have simply created a brand new character.
