Blog The Jade Host: Mayan Lizardmen

Terrain projects continue with some custom tabletop terrain Mayan Stela!

First three were made with foam and some cast Mayan glyphs. The face is just soft foam.

After making a mold of the three of them last night, the resin cast versions were spot on! Minor imperfections that can easily be explained away as they are ruins after all.

First thought it were knee pads for working trousers... then zoomed in and thought yeah... nice... a bit of an Oreo cookies look... guess it's my phone... otherwise some highlights could make it look more stone like...

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider I saw some of those, but covered in gold. Those also looked awesome, but I think I would also go for the stone look.

A while ago I started these two dudes...

… and finally finished them yesterday! Here is the salamander:

The salamander model is known as a "sailback," from the Frostgrave Ghost Archipelago expansion.

The model was a pain to put together, as it was a mix of metal bits and a resin body. Lots of gaps, and the feet 100% did NOT line up with the base, so I built up a muddy hill for him to rest his back to feet on. This allows his head to face directly forward.

As much as it was difficult to assemble, I love how it turned out! The 6th edition metal salamanders never looked that good to me, and the older 5th edition models (that looked a lot like this one) were way too warty for my taste.

With his hunting party of skinks:

Also finished my "skink" leader, my stand-in for a skink priest with feathered cloak. The model itself is from Reaper miniatures (known as a skycaller).

Named for a Mayan ruler of Calakmul, Sky Witness:

Happy how he turned out!

Nice work :artist:, i really like the Terradon priest!

Looking at it gives me the idea to convert some GW Savage Orruks with Terradon bits ;)
(sadly i'm lacking the time and money for such a project)

I love the sally and it’s pose so much. The effort was worth it, they look so dynamic!

As for the terradon priest, the old joke of “hey buddy, why the long face” springs to mind. :p But in all sincerity it’s a cool model and I think you found a great use for it.
