Blog The Jade Host: Mayan Lizardmen

Yes they normally come in a set of 10.

I was originally thinking a dwarf pirate force consisting of a unit of Long Drong Slayers, some piratey thunderers and warriors, and a unit of counts-as miners that look like deep sea divers from a jules verne book. Also would have added a unit of regular slayers to be dressed up like islander cannibals, and of course cannons. Lots of pirate cannons. Maybe a gyrocopter dressed up to look like a pirate lifeboat.

I never really developed the chaos dwarf pirate angle, but I figured they would have deal with the slave trade to Lustria, and be supplemented by some orc slave regiments and some Lustrian ogres. Lots of big beards and big hats. I was partially inspired by these chaos dwarfs:

I can't find the original link, but here is a link to the guy who made them, Tjub from Chaos Dwarfs Online.

Also for bases I wanted to use a similar concept by wonkobaggins at DakkaDakka; have a bunch of dwarfs coming up along the beach, with palm trees and barrels lining the coastline.

Lots of good stuff here. So many projects still to do!
That is some really great stuff. I would love to see you tackle such an interesting project (and keep us updated with pictures of course! :)).

I'm pretty sure that captain dwarf is a white dwarf. I know the vampire hunter and movie director for sure, and pretty certain that the pirare is one too. Those were always brilliant models!

As always thanks for the support! I will definitely keep you posted if I ever attempt the pirate dwarf project. I always loved those classic White Dwarf models, don't know if I will ever own one of those though, maybe there will be a White Duardin in the future?

Time for some more Lizardmen, this time my special and rare units! First are my custom jungle swarms. I wish these guys were still core units because now they compete with all the other great special units the army has. I really liked the jungle swarms because they were always underestimated; I would just use them as tarpit roadblocks on the flanks of the army. These guys are some of the plastic snakes from the cold one kits and some baked clay snakes thrown onto a base. Someday I will add texture to these and all my bases, haven’t gotten around to that yet.

Next up are the Saurus Cavalry. I have enough that I can run either three units of five or one giant Death Star unit of fifteen to use as a bunker for my converted saurus cowboy.

Each of the three units has it’s own name:

Green Saurus Cavalry- Guardians of the Kopan Temple

Red Saurus Cavalry- Watchers of Ikal Pass

Black Saurus Cavalry- Stewards of the Dark Cenyote

Next my Chameleon skinks. My Chameleons are based on the picture from the old Lizardmen army book:

Chameleon Skink Inspiration.jpg

They are not quite as good as the ones by Andy Hoare, but I like how they turned out! I just need to base them…

Usually the chameleons wind up being sacrificed to whatever unit they attempt to attack in my brother’s wood elves army. That being said, while they are a rather expensive speed bump and have rarely survived a game, they often earn far more than their starting points back.

More pictures later :D

I really like those red cold ones! Just look really good! Those chameleons look fantastic in terrain and are a great reproduction of Andy Hoare colours! Jungle swarms look great too!

Wow I like the horde of cold ones and jungle swarms!! I ´m also sculpting mine, I didn´t feel like ordering them :). I already have 8 cold ones, maybe I get other 8 to get that big horde!!! When you play your cold ones in one block, do you do so ranking them 15x1 or 5x3?

Thanks! I plan to make more jungle swarms in the future, mostly because they were so simple to make. And cheap.

Surprisingly I like how this iteration of cold-ones look, better than their previous "Godzilla" incarnation, and even though the dark elf cold ones still look a little bit better I feel these fit in with the Mayan-army aesthetic I was going for. Especially the gold collar around their necks. If you were looking for some inspiration, I kind of wished I had seen this link before painting my army, post #40 has some truly beautiful green cold one cavalry painted by ModernKiwi.

Saurus Cav Green Cold Ones.jpg

@Jorgik I normally ran them in three groups of five each, mostly to cause my brother's wood elves to have to divide their firepower amongst several small units. They normally wound up depleted by the time they charged into enemy lines, but at least they made it their. I tried using the death star unit once and they never made it :(.

@Warden

Very nice but get those bases finished :punch:

They will look much better, you know they will ;)

I still need to paint some Cav but I really don't like doing them......

:sour: Agreed. I do need to get the bases finished. I am practicing by basing my Lustrian Bretonnians first, mostly because I didn't want to make any mistakes with my Lizardmen.

I originally thought doing Lizardmen cavalry was hard, then I started painting an army filled with knights for core... :argh:

Edit: also 100th post!

Wasn´t there a rule somewhere that if your army general was riding a cold one your cold one riders could count as core?

Yea, I was a bit disappointed after I painted those 40 cold ones just before our 8th ed. book came out.

That is a lot of cold ones :wideyed:. I liked the idea of using them as core in the previous book but I only ever bough the two sets, never any further than that. Only issue I had with the sculpts was they did look a bit... stupid. But then again that is justified in the rules!

Random fact: :bookworm:
Andy Hoare wrote the 7th edition Lizardmen book.

No way. I just confirmed it too. Good to know!

AOS, AOS, AOS, AOS, AOS

I haven't tried AOS yet. To be honest the vast majority of my games were played with this old book:

OldWarhammerRulebook.jpg

Aside from a few battles in 7th and 8th, I haven't gone so far as to attempt AOS. I like the idea of using whatever I want, but I always loved the fluff of the Old World and the world that went with the rules. I may try AOS at some point when we move to a new location, but for now I will stick to collecting what I like.
