With losing the ability to strike first when charging, how does everyone plan to equip and use their carnosaurs in 8th?

Initiative 4 for the rider isn't so hot, but 2 is miserable on the beast itself, and I'd imagine the enemy would direct all his attacks at the creature before the big S7 thunder stomp hits. Other than careful target prioritization, is there a remedy? The instant death initiative spells like the Magic Sun can't be good either...

I'm not sure what magical items are available in the new book, but I'm sure there's some good ones to give the rider. Anything leap out as especially suitable?

Your thoughts, as always, are appreciated.
 
There still isn't going to be many things that kill it outright since it has pretty good toughness. I think the main thing is going to be making sure to hit the flank not the front to avoid characters, unit champs and the second rank attacking.
 
The sword that give initiative 10 could help. Cut down some of the guys first at least.
 
yeah... my suggestion would be to kill whatever character they have with the oldblood first and then let the rank and file guys try to kill the carno before the carno strikes. oh and at the same time, pray that they fail their terror check and if it fails, pray that they fail their fear test in CC.

I don't know to be honest, I am going off the rumours and certainly don't know all the rules for 8th. I haven't heard of that but it is possible.
Still, only having one rank attacking you on the flank is better than 2 from the front.
 
Best option is to use it as part of a combined charge. Small elite units just don't cut it anymore. It doesn't matter if your 450 point Lord and Carno kills 10 models, if they still have 10 left they are sticking around with stubborn. Now your Lord is exposed, can be flanked, and swamped.
 
Ehmm... gonna have to start running lots of ranked skinks around... I think the era of the blowpipe is at an end.
 
Not me. I am going to run just as many skinks with blowpipes (if not more). I will take more ranked skinks with Krox though.
 
your best bet is to get off either biron's time warp or speed of light (both are spells from lore of light)

Birona's Time Warp-Asf, +1 Att, and double Movement.

Speed of Light-WS 10, In 10.

both affect a unit, which means both the carni and oldblood, also put together will give you the ability to hit on 3's and get rerolls. which if u ask me is great on any saurus block, but it's AMAZING on the carnousaur and Oldblood!!

Why are they getting re-rolls? They don't have ASF, they might have higher I than their opponent but you need both to get re-rolls.

Sounds great, but you'd have to have an Old Blood on Canosaur and a Slann. Not going to be possible unless your playing 3000+ games.
 
Right that strategy would only work in a 3,000+ game. I think the best combo for the Carno lord is a ASF sword and the 4+ ward save. Monster!
 
I would say a good build for the Oldblod is Sword of Swift Slaying, Armour of Destiny, Bane Head, and Dragonbane Gem.

This gives him ASF, 1+ AS, 4+ WS, doubles wounds on a single character, and a 2+ WS against flaming attacks.

Another possibility is Sword of Bloodshed, Armour of Fortune, and Dragonbane Gem.

This gives him +3 attacks, 1+ AS, 5+ WS, and a 2+ WS against flaming attacks.

With the new items in the rulebook, the Oldblood has unlimited combos for him.

I was thinking sword of bloodshed and the strength potion. That way in the one round where he really needs to kill a big monster or tough armored character he can have 8 str 8 attacks. The rest of the time 8 str 5 attacks would really slaughter rank and file. Probaby best to have him on cold one for this config.
 
Two questions: 1)Will the carnosaur rider still be able to join units as a ridden monster in 8th, and 2) Is anyone thinking of doing this?

Conventional 7th edition wisdom was that the monster could negate ranks and break units just as well, and maneuver much better, on it's own. Now there seems to be a big danger of it getting tied up in combat against a stubborn foe and smashed by something else. I've toyed with the idea of putting it with some cold one riders and a re-roll misses banner to help with it's ability to flank/steamroll the soon to be prevalent larger units.
 
Ridden monsters cannot join units. So the Carnosaur will no longer be able to join units. However, the Oldblood will get a +1 to his AS because he is riding a monster.

Sorry to burst your bubble but:
To negate ranks there has to be a second rank eg. 5 for Infantry & cav, 3 for Monst. Inf.
There is also no such thing as a reroll banner in the BRB (rumoured to be called Bloodlust Banner)

The potion of speed (+3 initiative for 1 turn) + a fancy sword + bane head + Ward save item should be decent vs characters or monstrous infantry.
