AoS Terradon Chief Question

The Chief adds a no-brainer Command Ability to a pack of Terradons (multiple D3 MW on a 2+ WOW!) - talk about being a flying pack of Monster Killers ...or a Warp Cannon Killer etc...

Anyway the question. The Terradon sprue includes the Chief as an option to build. Great. The model therefore includes the Deadly Cargo boulder. Yet no mention is made that the Chief can drop a rock. He does have the keyword TERRADON and the Deadly Cargo description says " Terradons carry heavy boulders..." yet no mention on it...what are we spose to do?... cut the boulder off the model and have him fly light? Funny how there is no model of the Chief depicted in the Tome...

I think it's an oversite but what do you think?

The Terradon Chief doesn't have the deadly cargo rule, so he isn't able to drop his boulder. Modeled mine with the boulder anyways because it has the best option to connect to the flight stand.
 
how exactly have you build the chiefs for rippers & terradons to distinguish them easily? The terradon chief at least wields a sword which is a minor detail, but both are super similar to the "regular" riders.

just do the paint scheme slightly different. or the base. or an extra add on. my Saurus alphas have gold shoulder plates and accents, the rank and file get silver.
 
The Terradon Chief uses the other head option. The one with the giant golden mask and has the Sky Sword. I gave the Ripper Chief the hand axe over the sword. And used the other head option for the chief. The Snarling one with crest piercings.

lol I put helmets on my normal ripper riders and left the alpha helmet less... hes the crazy one so he goes "freebird" style!
 
meh, paintjob it is then, my existing terradons & rippers already have the various helmets, and relying on just the weapon is going to be confusing.
 
1. Aside from a slightly different paint scheme, throw on any additional bitz that make sense like some feathers, armor (as suggested), or mount them differently. I took a regular skink for fun, chopped in the Chief's head, dressed him up in a bunch of feathers all down his back and set him up in a standing position. He looks like a Sioux War Chief surfing on a crazy P-51.

2. In order to actually make them be able to touch base to base (for pile-ins or other need to get as many packed in as possible), I mount them on brass rods at different heights (Hobby Lobby) so they don't smack into each others wings. You can drill a different angle for the rod in the boulder or body to make for some cool "divebombing" or "yawing" angles. The rod is much stronger and frankly looks better than the clear rod. Painted flat black, the brass rod does not catch your eye like the clear rod does anyway. I made the base's rod slightly larger and taller so I can separate the bird from the base for packing up. The "bird" rod slides into the base's rod. When I move the model, I grab it by the rod or base and then the "bird" stays attached - no problem. I have a spare base with a stock clear rod for reference for measuring if my opponent has an issue. The Chief bird is the tallest.

3. Something else to consider is magnetizing the Chief's ass with a magnet on the bird body (or small brass rod that slides into another) so you can swap him out for a regular rider. This would allow you to easily add a regular rider/bird to your collection in case you were squeezed for points and needed a unit say for capping an objective but didn't have the points for a Chief. I personally wouldn't take a unit without a Chief - but magnetizing him to allow for a regular rider to swap out could be a benefit down the road - especially since they are currently boxed in 3's. Like hot dogs never seem to match the same number in buns. Or you could just see if your opponent was ok with a "counts as" (unless of course he were a Skaven in which case he would demand you give him something like your pizza).
