8th Ed. Swift Reform Skrox Shooting

Hey guys!

Any tips on situations for reforming your skrox unit 10 wide (or something) to maximize shots/stand and shoot.

I really like the idea of it, but with such short range I fear that on the charge with the lack of ranks my skrox will just break? Or is the key to pick on slow targets to avoid getting charged, and then reform back to ranks and charge yourself?

I realize Skrox are a support unit, but I am forced to use them in an upcoming 500 point all-comers game as my big unit (I will only have chamos and a skrox block.. maybe a salamander if I'm lucky).

Can I rank them 10 wide, move forward to maximize shots, stand and shoot with maximum shots, and safely revert back to ranks? The hope is that anything coming at me will be so whittled down from all my shooting that the Skrox can make short work of them.

It depends on what you face. If you're staring down a low armor monster then I'd say go for it. If your only chance to survive against a unit is steadfast it's probably not a good idea.

Like so many thing in WFB you have to look at the situation. What I might do to kill a giant might get me killed quickly if I'm facing Chosen.

So I'll say that you should do it, if there's a god chance that the shots + stand and shoot will kill or weaken your target in a way that gives you an advantage.

What I meant was more in terms of approach.

I wouldn't go 10 wide and then move 6" away to get a volley at Chosen with shields.. but should I approach a lightly armored unit 10 wide? Stand back and shoot at max range?

Basically, am I baiting charges? Keep distance? Is there any point at all against slightly armored units?

The way I see it, skrox are first and foremost melee units. The javelins are an added extra that might help a bit on a stand and shoot. By all means, you can reform to 10 wide if you like but make sure that you can keep your steadfast.

My preference would be to have supporting BP skink skirmishers to do the poison shooting for you. They are quite versatile and will do the job much more effectively than 10-12 skinks with javelins (IMO).

So in summary, I think it's a good idea to use the skrox to their strength (i.e. melee) and think of the javelin shots as an added extra (but not sacrifice CR when doing so)

Problem is I won't have BP skinks as support.. it looks like I can only afford a unit or 2 of chamos (only one if I can take a sally) and this block of skrox. The goal is really to lighten whatever is coming my way.

Doing the math though, going 10 wide only affords me about 6-7 extra shots. With the chance of losing way too much combat rez though, its probably a better idea not to do it. Maybe if I'm staring down like 3 chaos hounds, but the skrox could win that safer in combat anyways.

I just know its going to be tempting to do it against a 3 man Sword Master charge though.. Probably can't beat that in combat, but with a bad 10 wide stand and shoot round, I could lose combat to 1 of those bastards

Cool, sounds like you've thought through your tactics! Make sure you have a specific purpose for each of these units (they can have dual or triple uses). For example: Cham skinks take on war machines, high toughness troops, salamanders take on hordes, high AS troops etc. In that case, the cham skinks should be able to have 1 or 2 shots at the swordmasters before they get to your skrox infantry.

I will mostly be playing against High Elves and beastmen for now, so I think an all skink army should be able to get some decent wounds through from shooting.

Its now a balancing act between cohorts/skirmishers and chameleon skinks to support my skrox cleanup bus.

I still think the plan will be to deploy the skrox pretty far back, and let the skinks dance around weakening targets 1 at a time.

Was mostly looking for another way to get the most out of my really important skrox unit. If there were strategies of approach with swift reform to maximize shots before I get into combat I was interested to hear them

Something that I found that won me a game recently is to stick them in a building for a turn if things are close by. I jumped into a building beside a units of swordmasters and just went to town with 20 javelin shots (10 per floor of building I think) until they got out of range.

What should my frontage be for hitting a 30 man skeleton block?

The only option available to me is to avoid it, or pincer it to death. And I'm terrible with movement so I'm attacking it.

Do I want a 5 frontage to minimize skinks dying? Or is it a fairly even matchup? Krox are going to be worth their weight in gold, but I have a feeling the dead skinks are going to lose me combat.

I haven't done well against VC, so take this with a grain of salt.

I would suggest fielding the minimum frontage necessary to allow your Kroxigors to be in a legal formation. Unless you are worried about being flanked in which case you should take the minimum size frontage to give your Kroxigor a skink shield from all vulnerable directions. You want to try to win CR in order to get maximum Crumble and skinks tend to die faster than they kill things. Every skink you lose is both a dead skink and one fewer dead skeleton (up until the point your lost CR in which case a dead skink is a dead skink).

I meant the minimum or five, whichever is higher. You could field them in ranks of four with two Kroxigor but then you get no ranks at all which would hurt your CR.
