8th Ed. Starting Lizardmen and need suggestions/help

So I'm brand new to lizardmen and brand new to the world of fantasy. I play 40k regularly and I wanted to try out what all my friends called "the superior system." I just picked up a copy of the Army Book and the new Battalion box. After looking at the point values, it looks like i can manage around 1,000pts out of it if i pick up a Hero unit. Is that accurate? What should I do with upgrades and the such? Any help is extremely appreciated since I'm lost!

Every army need a general so you are going to need a hero.
just make up a basic list and try a basic game or two before
you start worrying about the most optimized list.

as fay as the Battalion box goes try and make an equal amount of each option.
