I was thinking of the novelization of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

There were not many points where the novels went against the movies. More often than not they added things but never removed or really changed things.

The only one noticeable change in Empire Strikes Back was the time differential which was left vague in the movie.

It took months for the Millenium Falcon to make it to Bespin. That means Luke trained with Yoda for months, and also means that most of the Rebel Alliance assumed Leia was dead.

These novels were written before the prequels, so they could not reference them.

There was a scene where Palpatine probed Luke's mind as he tried to resist. Palpatine only got pieces, but he was able to use logical deduction to put two and two together. In this book, it was unclear whether Palpatine was aware of Yoda or not. Obviously in the prequels everyone knew who Yoda was, but they did give a hint that Palpatine knew him just by the way he phrased it, Yoda style.

Palpatine was like. "Your skills are far too advanced to have come from Obi Wan's teachings alone. You must have additional instruction."

Telepathic battle ensues as Palapatine probes his mind.

"Hmm, this Yoda. Living is he?"

Another telepathic fight.

"Good, good"
