I really liked these dudes too, I was just hoping that the laser-machine-gun dude's backstory was that he was an old clone trooper that had lost his faith in the empire somehow and went off adventuring through the galaxy. And then met Donnie Yen and they had even more epic adventures. Kinda like Gotrek and Felix to a degree, except both were BAMFs from the start!

I think you're looking for Captain Rex as an old Clone Trooper character who loses his faith in the Empire. Baze Malbus on the other hand was once a monk like Chirrut but then lost his faith and became a hired gun for a long while, before returning to his homeworld to help Chirrut fight the Empire, becoming his bodyguard to protect him whenever he got himself into trouble. Baze couldn't have been a Clone Trooper anyway because he didn't look anything like Jango Fett. There's a really interesting book I'm hoping to get soon called 'Guardians of the Whills' that follows Baze and Chirrut before they meet Jyn, Cassian and K-2SO in Rogue One, a bit like a Gotrek and Felix story.

I recently watched the second season of Rebels on BluRay and I kinda liked that first episode featuring Rex. It was nice to see him again.
I often wonder what happened to the others. It is kinda sad that they didn't have a choice. Poor Fives. Cody allegedly became a good Imperial commander but we don't know what then happened to him I think.
