What about fighters?
a Star destroyers carries a lot of TIE fighters, at least a dozen of TIE bombers and boarding crafts.
in space combat, bombers are employed to weaken large targets like capital ships. I don't recall star trek ships being armed with a lot of anti-fighters weaponry, bombers are faster than the Destroyers and could overload the protective shieds of the federation ship
This video explains the in-universe reasons why Star Trek is pretty much the only major sci-fi franchise that doesn't have starfighters as the back bone of space combat.
In Star Wars, every faction seems to rely on spray and pray in space combat and in Star Trek, precision is the king.
I think in the case of a Star Destroyer versus the Enterprise, TIE fighters would be quite useful. Federation Vessels almost never miss and they probably kill a X-Wing or a Y-Wing with one shot. But TIE fighters already die in one shot, so what else is new? With 72 TIE fighters, they could overwhelm a Federation vessel, because they don't have a very fast rate of fire though they have a very big gun.
I think we're also looking at a generic Federation ship, similar to the Enterprise. I know it has several weapons to defend itself, but it is an exploration vessel predominately. I don't watch the ST shows enough, but a Federation warship might be quite different. Still, you're right that we don't really see one-pilot ships used in ST space combat. I assume that's because photon torpedoes fired in spread could probably wipe out a whole squadron of small ships (or TIEs in this case).Yep, that video makes a good point about the high precision of ST weaponry (at least phasers... the same cannot be said for torpedoes), but fed vessels are not crammed with weapons and there's a limit to what such a ship can deal with at the same time.
Or at least, while the ship destroys those pesky bombers, it gives time to the Destroyer to hammer down all its heavy weaponry upon that single target.
This may be a battle tech vs tech, but numbers matter too
