Originally, George Lucas planned for Endor to be inhabited by Wookies. He was concerned that A New Hope would he really be his first and last Star Wars movie so he was afraid he would never get to include Wookies, so wanted to shoehorn in a Wookie.

I think if the Ewoks were Wookies far fewer people would have a problem with them beating stormtroopers.

Also, this was Return of the Jedi was the first Star Wars project to show the cracks that George Lucas needs someone on hand to tell him "no, that's not a good idea."

He certainly needed that for the prequel trilogy.

That's also how Kathleen Kennedy conned him out of the Star Wars franchise, because to his face she agreed with everything he said so often that he assumed she thought like he did. BUT as Kennedy's critics have pointed out to her.

I know, it would have been great to see Wookiees beat up the Stormtroopers, and would have made so much more sense. VI would have been a decent film if they'd done that
