What are some of your favourite magic item combos for the big wizard that allow you do do sneaky, awesome, or unexpected things?

My first thought was ethereal magic carpet flyer, but it seems as though Slann can't fly as they aren't "on foot".

Yeah, Slann can't use the magic carpet. My playgroup still let's me though :meh:

I know I've used the hex scroll (turns opponent wizard into a frog) with some fairly hilarious results. Very situational though, and you can give it to a skink. Its not a slann specific item for doing ridiculous things.

Ethereal Beasts Slann with Transformation of Kadon.. wait, its not allowed either. bugger :D

If you are taking a Slann without Temple Guard, you probably want to keep him away from close combat. If the Slann has taken lore of Shadows (as many players do) that Slann is safer with a Skink Priest than without one. If the Slann is engaged in close combat or about to be forced into close combat, you can use the Shadow Lore attribute to switch places with a skink priest (who probably already used up his dispel scroll) and throw the skink priest under the bus. This same trick works with any infantry character, but skink priests are cheaper than the others and less likely to be engaged in CC than a Saurus character or Skink chief.

So been looking at it a bit, why not try for some 1st/2nd turn shenanigans to use a death and shadow slann together.

Shadow steed of shadows up to the enemy flank making sure to stay within 18" of the the death mage. Pops a pit/pendulum depending on how your dice rolls went, swaps places with the death mage who lets lose with purple sun and then with the dice generated can try to cap any characters in range.

I know it is a bit dependent on the dice, forbidden rod skink anyone, and I certainly wouldn't do it in a friendly match up, but for those times when you want to crush someone before they have even really done anything so they learn to tone it down a bit. I am looking at you two hpas/hydras.

So has anyone tried it and what was it like?

Egg of Quango isn't too bad for a dash of sneaky.

Conspicuous absenses are sneaky. Against players well used to my playing style, I've left the Slann at home to make them waste their anti-magic purchases.

Ditto on leaving the Slann out. My opponents are waiting to see the big frog with all his magical might, then find themselves facing a much bigger army than they expected, headed by an Oldblood that's going to eat their face.

Higher State:
Oh no, your Hydra charged my Slann! How could I be so foolish as to leave him out in the open? Or maybe...your Hydra is now stuck in a combat he can't win, and I will Spirit Leech him out of existence.

Ethereal combined with Arcane Unforging can lure a character into a useless charge, as well. Just keep supporting charges away so he doesn't go all Unstable on you, or give him BSB + War Banner.
