So who uses them, why do you use them and are they worth it? I know for multiple steggadons with the 2d6 +1 impact hits is good but other than that they dont seem any better than scar vets
 
They are cheaper and can be put on terridons.

true.

They can also be very effective mage hunters(terradon/cloak)
They can carry your frenzy standard(if you want one ofc)
They can be living torpedoes just harassing people
They can also be used with a scar-vet as some sort of personal guard... but this includes challenging and therefore is risky.
They can have some nice stuff like Venom of the firefly frog and get nice poison. :D
 
They have strength 4, so there are several of our magic weapons that actually makes them fairly decent in combat. They are a cheap way to get a BSB. They can hunt from a terradon, though I am wondering the real use of this when a unit of terradons can hunt just as well aside from geting to a mage in a unit I guess. And they are not much of a threat to enemies so they won't atract much attention.
 
Thanks for some ideas, im thinking that puttting him with a unit of saurus with a good weapon could help
 
Just remember he is on a 20mm base while saurus are on 25mm, so he won't fit all that well..
 
I agree with everyone above. They are cheap and a lot of opponents dont see them as much of a threat until its too late.

Here are a couple of my favorate builds:

Skink on Stegadon w/Warspear
Skink w/Feathered Cloak
Skink Standard Bearer
 
I was looking at the feathered cloak, in my opinion it was my favorite layout. It gets him to the enemy fast, helps flank if need be, so many uses, gives you room to switch things up
 
You can use skink chief as a flank controller... with Cloack of feathers and sword of might (or Burning blade) he can destroy enemy flankers (light or heavy cavalry a like) and single 20x20 based model can be attacked back by only 2 25x50 based model... its especially good at hunting vanilia empire Knights or (all kind of) light cavalry... ;)
 
They go first, but they pay a lot of points for models with low toughness and poor armour, if they leave anything alive then they die. And with our very poor initiative we should expect and even rely on the fact that we will not strike first against any foe, then if by chance we come across one where we can go first it is a bonus.

Saurus warriors will have absolutely no trouble with spearmen even with their strike first, in fact I would go as far as to say 15 saurus could be 20 spearmen. Assuming neither are charging for maximum attacks on both sides, the HE get 15 attacks; 10 hit, ~4 wound, 2 die. Saurus retaliate with 16 attacks; 8 hit, ~5 wound, 3-4 dead elves. They have a rank up and outnumber, 15 saurus win. Doesn't look so scary now does it?

Sure swordmasters and white lions have higher S and WS so will deal more damage, but they also cost a lot more points and die very very easily to shooting and magic. Also, impact hits go before ASF so the stegadon will have a field day.

But I digress. If you get the charge (so they don't get charge bonuses) you should survive, I probably wouldn't attack dragon princes with a lone chief though. They have 2 attacks each.
 
Yes ASF goes before charging, I meant they wouldn't get charge bonuses since we are talking about a chief vs cavalry. If you charge dragon princes, they will go first but have s3. If they charge you, they will go first and have s5. Very significant.
 
I used a SC on a Terradon with the staff that has the 3x str5 shot. It worked out well. Also he raises the unit Ld by 1 for feigned flight.
 
I was thinking of trying out a dual hand weapon with cloak and poison chief.... but there are 2 magic items in there

however I like to save money and i converted a skink from the stegadon set into a dual wielding chief to go in my javelin skinks with just teh cloak and light armor for mage and war machine hunting, he is also only 84 points, which is cheaper pointwise and moneywise than 3 terradons, and with 4 attacks at ws 4 and all str 4, he may very well accomplish the same deeds...

Now i just have to figure out how to survive a stand and shoot with him :D

Simple, charge the flank of units with mages in. ^^

Otherwise... You won't if it's not Bs1 ofc...
 
Personally I think if you have a skink chief (without a steg) then he HAS to be flying. If he isnt then there is no point as he wont get to attack mages and war machines (his job).

So now we get to the question of HOW does he fly? By cloak or by Terradon? Terradon adds AS, doesnt use up magic item points and adds dropping rocks, but costs more points and he is more of a target and can only join stegadon units. The cloak is cheaper, sneakier, but uses up magic item points making him less deadly, doesnt make him more resilient and is much more of a one-combat-pony.

Then we get to HOW does he attack? There are several options. There are the cheap ones (spear/2 HWs), the shooty ones (Staff of Lost Suns), and there ar the combat ones (Chotec, Sword of Might, Dagger of Sotek). All have different pluses and minuses that can be gone over for days.

So the answer to these questions are how do you view your Chief. Is he the type who will go into combat with a war machine crew/mages unit and kill them or die trying. Or is he the type that will march block, annoy the enemy, catch fleeing units and also go after war machine crews and mages.

Personally this is a FSoD build that I want to try:
Chief
LA
Enchanted Shield
Dagger of Sotek
Terradon
Javelin (maybe)

What do you guys think?
 
I've tried my first flying skink today vs a dwarf .. with ofcourse quiet some machines. Altough he only fought once and taking out a Cannon i kinda liked him.. Hopping from forest to forest. I be sure to use him more.

A Chief on a Terradon is quiet some points.. but it is worth discussing .. To take a Cloak or a Terradon.
TBH i'd pick a Blowpipe.. BS5 and a move to short range and you hit on 4's. Its sad you need the Enchanted Shield with a Chief.. he would be so much more fun if you didnt need it that much.:( A 6+ Scaly Skin save would be reasonable..would end up with a 4+ Save in combat instead a 3+ but you get to use a nice weapon together with the cloak. GW knows no fun...
