7th Ed. Skavenpelt Banner in saurus unit

is a chief BSB with the skavenpelt banner in a unit of warriors with spears a viable combination? 32 S4 attacks sound nice on papper but...
 
Don't let your opponent know they can lead your saurus around at will...
 
If your careful with screening, I can see it being a viable option, my concerns would be

a) Frenzy baiting

b) When you get charged (and you have spears so you normally like to be) the skink chief would be a mighty soft target. (no magic items, very little save, T3)

c) If you do charge you don't get the rear rank attacks.

I toyed with a similar idea a while back and it seemed to me that its almost a case of trying to turn an anvil unit into a hammer unit by using magic items...
 
It makes me wonder though. Would the same skink in a unit of TG who also have a Slann possibly get the attack but not be subject to the rest of Frenzy?
 
I thought someone else would have jumped on this, but I guess I'll have to burst everyone's bubble...

The banner can't be in a unit of saurus even if a skink chief is carrying it. The banner specifically says "skinks only" not skink chief only, but skinks in general. The point being only a unit type of skinks can have the banner in the unit, which is why it is never normally taken.

That's incorrect. Where it says Skinks Only is the part of the entry where it says what can be equipped with it. If it effected skinks only it would state that in the description of the effect. A skink chief with this banner in a unit of Saurus would cause the unit to frenzy.
 
.... afraid I'll have to disagree there Slannofitza, the "Skinks only" part is all about who can CARRY the banner, not who can benefit, so it can't be carried by a Scar Vet, but it can be carried by a Skink Chief (as was the scenario mentioned in the original post) and the Skink Chief can join Saurus units, thereby giving them the benefits.

Again, where it says sinks only is just who can be equipped with it. It wouldn't matter if it said Skink Chief Only, Saurus Old Blood on Cold One with Halberd Only or Lord Kroak Only the effect would carry over to the unit, any unit, the character equipped with it was in
 
the restriction is on who can carry the item. under the item name is the restriction on who can carry the item, while the item description explains who is affected by it. in this case the unit, in the case of the plaque of dominion: enemy wizards..., in the case of the storm banner (skaven): all missile fire on the battlefield and fliers, etc.
 
it says skinks only so that priests and chiefs can carry it,
the "skinks only" heading refers to who can carry it, same as any item.
if the frenzy only affected skinks then that would be stated in the effects of the banner
 
That';s the way I understood it as well, and there is nothing in the Erata (or Faq, can't remember what they call it) that say otherwise, I also asume that it would effect Kroxigors too.
 
the priest can carry it in theory, but the problem is that a priest cannot be a BSB and therefor he cannot wield any magic banner into combat, would be fun though...a priest with frenzy :spiderman: :meh:
 
it does affect kroxigors but i don't know if thats a good ideea. the skrox units are rather vulnerable and they will kill the BSB 1st as he's an easyer target than the kroxigors and for 2-3 extra S6 attacks its not really worth it (the skink's aren't that impressive to be worth a banner) and it would be free VP's to the enemy. in a saurus block he might have a bit more survivability but people would still try to kill him i guess. its a risk like any other BSB
 
Your best bet to keep him alive would be to keep an old blood or scar vet in the unit to accpet challenges on his behalf. Another idea would be to mount him on a horned one and slap him in a unit of CoC...
 
i did think about mounting him but then you couldn't take a magic banner as the horned one is a magical item
 
What happens if the chief carrying the banner dies, but the unit hasn't been defeated in CC yet? Do they get to keep their frenzy?
 
i doub it since the banner is what makes tthem subject to frenzy, eliminating teh source should eliminate teh effect but i'm not sure..... the unit might still keep its frenzy since it is nowhere mentioned that frenzy (or other similar psychological effects) can be "dispelled" in any way, even by elimination teh source.
 
Carrying on with that particular train of thought; if the unit doesn't lose the frenzy, could the Chief go from unit to unit, giving each unit frenzy as it goes? That one seems a bit of a stretch to me...
 
its only fair if the unit DOESN'T lose it, that would rock :D
