8th Ed. Scar vets in warrior blocks

I'm planning to stick a Scar Vet in each of my Saurus Warrior blocks to speed up their killing, and was trying to decide whether I should put them on Cold Ones for the armor bonus and potential to jet out and assault something quickly.
Is this worth the risk to them from cannons and stonethrowers? Now that those things are templates, my understanding is that they won't get a "look out" save since they are cavalry in an infantry block.

If the consensus is to run them on foot what do you guys generally do about modelling a Scar Vet with great weapon?

You have definitely hit the major issues of fielding scar vets: mounted they are more survivable in combat but can be sniped by cannon/template while on foot they are less survivable in combat but are fairly safe from templates. Personally, I like to field one of each and try and hide the mounted guy behind a building or skrox unit (and hope the cannon fails to kill a krox and the bounce stops). The mix of magic and weapons depends on the rest of the army but halberd/GW with venom of the FFF works fantastic and is cheap.

if you go for the cold one route, the charmed shield is fantastic. it saves you from one cannonball hit (well, on 2+). it costs almost nothing too. also, depending on what you usually face, if dwarf cannons are your biggest problem (those are the most common in my gaming group) they are often flaming to kill hydras and such. a dragonhelm will save you from those babies it is a bit risky though, but charmed shield + dragonbane gem + poison is a very cheap combo and offers surprising survivability to cannonballs.

In my opinion It all depends on the list that You are running. I Personally field either 3 Scar vets of CO, or one on Foot with Anty hydra gear (Burning Blade, potion of Speed, seed of rebirth dragonhelm la shield) He can be used vs Cav, Hell Pits and so on. If you go for Cold Ones, each must have some protection vs Ranged warmachine fire, i Filed my 3 with: 1 charmed shield, 2 Armour of Destiny 3 Our talisman that grants a 2+ ward vs the first unsaved wound. Since all have T5 and 1+ sv they are rather tough

Depends on the meta-game in your area. I rarely face a lot of warmachines so it isn't as much of a problem. Also everything that Lord Tsunami said.

There are some LoS tricks you can pull to protect them some, like parking a Stegadon between the scar vet and the cannon in question. Remember if he can't see the spot then the cannonball cannot be declared there so he'll have to aim closer and hope for bounce, and if it doesn't kill the steg then the cannon ball stops. Then again a good bounce and some good wound rolls and you could loose both so there you go.

I think scar vets are necessary in saurus blocks 1-2 per... Too many things will just decimate your blocks without them. Just left my beautifully painted tg and stegadon for the vets at 2400. Could have saved a 100 bucks and 20 hours of painting.

I only tend to play smaller points games, usually 800 points. I have a Scar Veteran with a Gold Sigil sword (I10 in CC) in a block of 20 Saurus warriors. It is irritates any enemy when they charge and have to face 4 S5 attacks, except High Elves.

I would say that there is no point of having solo Scar veterans, since they can be picked off. Most unfortunately, the Charm of the Jaguar Warrior is not as lethal as it used to be (9" Movement Scar Veteran!).

I keep em on foot and I keep em cheap. A scar vet is already better than most characters, barring vampires and chaos probably. I've never had them die, and they always cut through a few models as I need them too.

To model one with a great weapon, the Chakax model is a fantastic start. In fact, I just use Chakax as one of my scar vets.

I've been running them as cowboys lately. My buddies like to shoot my Saurus blocks for some reason so the SV's have had no problem getting into combat.

modelling a Scar Vet with great weapon?

I haven't tried it yet, but...

If you have access to the new Temple Guard kit and a Saurus Warrior left arm, you can mod their halberds into nasty looking great weapons. It will take a bit of time, but I think it will look great.

  Find two of the halberds that you like the most.
  Chop the weapon part off of one at the hilt.
  Chop the bottom of the pole off of the other. Leave a little pole so his hands won't be touching.
  (HARDEST PART) Now you have to file and use Green Stuff to make both the hands grasp the weapon.
  Glue the other weapon end on, making something like the weapon that Chakax has.

Yeah Ogres would be another tough one. I forgot about them because I haven't played against them in years.

There's quite a bit of nasty stuff out there, not even counting magical upgrades that may be encountered. Ogres, some beastmen heroes, warriors of chaos and some vampries. Probably forgetting a few. Being somewhat insulated from the general fantasy community up to this point I had forgotten how many guys can go toe to toe with us in the hero department.
Mostly I am likely to be facing Tomb Kings, Vampire Counts and Ogres. That being the case, is it generally better to outfit my scar vets with great weapons (recognizing that not everyone can have Venom) or go with a mixed approach; one with GW and two with the different ASF swords?

Chakax will make a swell great weapon model, but I love that two handed conversion. Might have to try something like that myself...

Well frankly a Scar vet with a ASF sword is the last idea that I would try. If you are facing TK and VC, than burning blade all the way. As for the 2 hand weapon, a Scar vet with a GW can only have a 3+ save on foot, so I would take only 1 and give him AoD. Vs Ogres i would either try Sword of mighs, Or Pihrana Blade.
P.S I use the Avatars of War model for a Gw scar Vet
