7th Ed. Scar-Veteran vs. Champion

The Obvious: There is a large gap between the points price of a Scar-Vet and a Saurus unit champion.

Comparing the two, you have to buy the Scar-Vet a shield to make them equal basic-equipment wise; the Champion pays a points tax if the unit has spears. So you're looking at a difference of 65 pts. +/- for a few boosts in stats, most notably the + to wounds.

If they are essentially performing the same role, are those points better spent in multiple Champions, or more basic Saurus Warriors? Are you really paying those points for access to magic items?

A scar-veteran is hands down better then a unit champion. Considering the stats alone he is worth it, but also take into account he can carry magic items, and such...

Also you can't take multiple champions in one unit. Though you can have both a scar-vet and a champ in one unit of saurus...

I...don't really know what else I could say, it seems to be obvious...

Different roles, really.
A scarveteran can join up wih the templeguards if it looks like they need help, the same goes for other saurus units and skinks. The 8 man (lizard?) unit of sauruses can't. The round the temple guards are charged they will have to wait and get in a position to countercharge.
The Scar vet also has access to magic items as Slann of Itza pointed out. You can give him the CotJW to go mage/war machine hunting by making unexpected teleport attacks, or boost the line where he's needed.

The 8 sauruses can hold the line and perform the more basic roles in combat (hold against charges and beat up the enemies) but they can't handle the finer stuff

Yes, A Scar veteran is definently better than adding an aditional 8 sauruses in my army. BUT I need my other sauruses to win the battle as well!

ummm I would much rather have the saurus scar veteran thank you very much, especially since once you give him burning blade, enchanted shield, and cold one, he's nigh indestructible.

I can see were Okopipi is coming from in some respects, say for example you want to go magic heavy and grab a slann with an additional discipline and make him BSB (just a natural assumption), a skink priest on an EoTG upgraded to level two and second skink priest upgraded to level two. Now assume all those fellows are tricked out with max magic item allowance. Even without the (almost) compulsory TG unit you've already reached 1040 points. do you really want to spend another 155 points on the scar vet build revered guardian set up on the previous post. Maybe at a 3000 points game I would but since that scar vet build doesn't really help with my magic heavy list (sure he can kill difficult units/characters but magic and my units could do the same thing) so I think in this instance it might be better to leave out the scar vet and bring in a few champs here and there.

Nonono, tht's why I said I need the other sauruses as well, but I would rather add a Scar veteran to the army than another unit of sauruses.
I was assuming that we talked about an army that already had one or two units of sauruses (sauri?).

They key for the scar vet is to have him mounted on cold one... that way is MUCH more effective and gives fear.

but then, for the above mentioned lord/hero kit, trying to get magical supperiority, you are spending 1195 points on characters alone. If your playing a big game and have oodles of points to spend, yes you can grab that scar vet. But because, it seems, most games are played at the 2000 to 2250 points margin you have spent over half your allowance are characters.
Sure they can perform a variety of tasks but if any one of those goes poof you've lost a significant portion of your army and you have become that much more vulnerable and week.
spend the 155 points one extra models for your essential units (terradons, COR, saurus warriors) and they will last that extra bit longer that will allow you to use your characters abilities (in this case, magic) to its fullest potential for that pivotal extra turn.

Saurus Scar Vet with GW,LA,Shield is under 100 Pst and He realy dont need mundane magical items(Ench.Shield or Sword of Might...ect...)... their stat lines very good (like a human hero with Sword of might and Ench. shield)... So I generaly take my Scar Vets without magical Equipments... In my Slann list, I give one of them Jaguar Charm and Use Steed of Shadows on the other one... one Scar vet can destroy any Warmachine or Shooting Unit witout any problem... So, Scar vets are more than Unit champions... and with out magical gear They are not expensive models point wise... In my Slann list I take My slann and 2 Scar vet under 650pst... thats give me about 1350 pst for troops....
