So my gaming group are having a heap of low point battles, pretty much for fun and the challenge. I was looking at my list and I wanted to take a hero level dude for some fluff, but as I realy dont like the skink chief that left me with a hard chioce Scar Vet or Skink priest. So in 500pt games which do you think is better??

Overall, I think you get more versatility with the scar-vet at low level games. The skink priest will not be nearly as tough or useful in the game.

Definitely the scar vet. For a 500 point game, a skink priest will give you a 2nd level caster with a comparatively weak lore that can easily be squished, yielding a bonus of 100 points for losing your general. Conversely, 125 points on a scar vet can give a survivable general that can also deal out some pain.

scar vet all the way. i find myself explaining to my opponent that worry about my skink priest that end the end of the day, he's still a skink and as such is an easy kill. SV is more resilient and more useful, especially in lower point games.

Sweet thanks for the reply. Will def go with the scar-vet. One other thing, i was going with a Scar Vet build like this;

Scar-Vet
-cold one
-light armour
-halberd
-venom of the firefly frog

this build still allows me the limited opportunity to use my initiative with +1S. The other thought i had was to equip him with a great weapon but I'm not sure if I'm really going to need S7 attacks. what do you think go with my halberd build or go the great weapon??

Well, normally I'd say get a great weapon. However this is a small game, which limits your options. Striking at your own initiative might even be worth it at this level, especially since your armour save isn't capped. Another thing is that a great weapon would force you to remove the venom or your light armour (scar vet + LA + cold one + great weapon + venom = 126 points --> not legal in 500 point game).

So in this case, stick with the poisoned halberd IMO.

I'd put him on foot and in a saurus block, and use the cold one points elsewhere on him. potion of speed if you want to strike first, or maybe a magic weapon slike sword of might and a shield.

Beacause it is a small game and there isnt much to shoot at, I would be worried about warmachines (as some can fit under the limit) and the lack of a Look out Sir for a cold one mounted scar vet, also the lack of a BSB make stupidity slightly more undesirable

anyway, the suggested cold one build
Scar Vet, cold one, light armour, halberd Votff is 124 points and gives
2+ AS, and 4 strength 6 poison attacks
(movement is not important as he will be in the saurus block)

This on foot load out looks better
Scar Vet, Dragonhelm, Light Armour, Halberd, Votff, Luckstone and is 119 abd gives
3+ AS that is one time rerollable, 2+ ward against flaming and 4 strength 6 poison attacks
So infact is similarly equipped than the cold one build, no stupid and cheaper

In fact you could also fit in a GW if you wanted strength 7

I wouldnt ever take the potion of speed beacause VotFF is so much more useful

Thanks heaps for the replies, some really good tips and as usual I have more questions. I do like the Scar Vet on foot and in bigger games that's how I normally run him, but in a smaller game with less ranged attacks my thinking with having him mounted was more maneuverability and the possibility for anadditional seperate combat unit to go monster hunting, clear chaff, kill any ranged units that may turn up. I understand that this tactic is a big risk but it may work. Also the cold one gives me a couple of attacks too. So in small games is it better to give up maneuverability for a little more protection, and would that sacrifice be justified cause he should stay in the saurus unit anyway??

Whether or not the scar vet needs to be mounted depends on the rest of the list. Having at least one thing in your army that cannot be stomped/thunderstomped is a definite must with all the new monstrous cav and "special" monsters like the WoC chimera that can fit into a 500 point game IMHO. Also, the added mobility allows him to get where you need him quickly to lend both combat power and LD 8.

Look out sir is worth a lot. I still don't know if I'd trade that for mobility.
