8th Ed. Saurus - hand weapons or spears ?

Hi guys, looking for some advice on how to arm my saurus warriors. I'm leaning towards smaller frontage, deeper ranks with spears but could just use some asvice before i build them. Cheers.
 
there is a thread going on at the mo discussing the very same thing, i sudjest you take a look mate, may help. in my army i always use spears, but thats just me. many will agree, however many will not.

thay are about even in effectiveness, spears are just more offence oriented and better in large blocks,
Handweapons are more defence oriented and better in smaller blocks.

Thanks man but i couldn't find it - has it dropped off the front page maybe ?

N810 - thanks, but spears lose their ability on the charge so iwouldn't saythey're more for offense. Iwas thinking of running them small but deepto giving them some resilience.
 
Maybe, i think it was called "spears- are they worth it?" or something like that. I run my spearman in 2 35 man units (ok, i love spearman units) 7 wide and 5 deep. this means on the charge they do just as many attacks as the hand weapon option, but if charged or from the second round on combats onwards, they get an extra rank, ok they lose the 6+ parry but bearing in mind your saurus are T4 standard, and i always take a life slaan so there's a good chance they won't be T4, More like T6 or even 8!, the extra rank in various situations i personally feel its worth it.

Eh, I honestly believe it is personal opinion now. I am taking a unit of each in my army. Spears because I already had some assembled from how much better they were in 7th ed, hand weapons because they are really cool looking.
 
I'm with Strewart. I run a unit of each.

Spears because they are great, and with proper deployment give me the attacks I need and then HW/Sh because they look awesome and are very resilient.

I run both blocks at 30, one 5x6 and one 6x5.
 
depends what ur using them for, if u got small units etc ike i do in my army i go for spears to get the extra rank, but if ur using a 'horde' unit u might as well go with hand weapon, Shield cos u still get ur 3rd rank.

Thats my personal opinion
 
Very true Ruzzman but in a horde the spearman would get a 4th rank would they not?

You do but 40 Saurus Warriors with spears cost 500+ (with command). As soon as you lose a wound, you will lose attacks so you would need something like 45-50 which cost 600+ points. A hefty amount of Saurus.
 
yes but 40 Spears w/full command would only cost 40 points more than 40 HW saurus equivilent.
