8th Ed. Rank your favourite non-LM armies :3

1. Bretonnia
My background is historical and archaeological, I have a wide-eyed love of medieval fortification and weaponry, so what else but Bretonnia? The heraldry is limitless and that sheer character makes up for a lack of models. Also; Mousillon! Which takes me nicely onto.....

2. Vampire Counts
The one thing equally as cool as medieval knights? Undead medieval knights. My all-time favourite Warhammer idea was a late '90s undead army themed on Bretonnians. Spectacular. If I had serious ability as a modeller, that is the army I would create. The conversion potential for Vamp armies is huge too; skeletons, zombies, loads of character.

3. Skaven
Hordes of chittering plague-bearers armed to the teeth with weaponry that take out opponents and themselves in explosive conflagrations? Yes please.

--------------

4. Wood Elves
Some interesting models and a real Lord of the Rings vibe.

5. Orcs and Goblins
Some hilarious models, I was always amused by the doom diver in the Shadow of the Horned Rat PS1 game. Loads of character.

6. Dwarfs
Great regular models, but I'm just not a fan of machinery.

7. Tomb Kings
Score lower than the Vampire Counts as I've never been quite as attracted to the Egyptian theme.

8. Empire
Bog-standard attraction; haven't the appeal of the more virtuous Bretonnians.

9. None
Zero interest in the remaining Elves, Chaos etc.

South of no.3 are armies I couldn't envisage collecting; the Bretonnians, Vamps, Lizards and Skaven are the only four armies that really grab me.

That is surprising since your background is history and archeology. I'm the exact opposite, I love the Egyptian theme.

Hmm this is from my limited experience and only from a painting view as I have not gamed yet,

1. High Elves, my 8 year old boy loves them.
2. Skaven they have some fantastic models
3. Orges, loads of options for gorey paint schemes
4. Orcs and Gobbos, these were my fav to paint years ago
5. Dark elves, sinister feel and great models
6. Warriors of Chaos again some great models

The dogs of war sounds like my kind of army tbh!

Nuff said.

1 hobgoblins
2 orcs
3 goblins
4 lizzies
5 Dogs of war
6 other stuff
.

.
Last: dark elves.....except when medium done with a good beer

Lol, here is an other archaeologist who doesnt care much about Egyptians. Egyptologists are also probably the most annoying people on the planet......closely followed by everybody who starts talking about Egypt as soon as they find out you are an archaeologist.

Edit

@NIGHTBRINGER
Haha i know! Have been orc/goblin only player for ca 25 years. They were my first choice when i was thirteen and they are still my first choice (although the current gw gorilla orcs are bud ugly, and oranges with teeth are the dummest things ever sculpted). Just be glad lizzies are at #4. About a year ago they would have been listed with the other stuff.

Hahaha... too funny. I take it that I'm safe to assume that you have had frequent run ins with Egyptologists that were less than enjoyable.

1 Wood elves! I love these forest dwellers and am building them as my second army. (Chance is that I might make them my main army. Don't tell the old ones or the dice gods)
2: Ogre kingdoms. For some reason I have this crazy idea to make a tentacle out of greenstuff, put it on their heads, paint them gumball pink and give them white pants. I would call the army; "The majin buu force"
3: Orcs and goblins. I like their fluff. I would never play them, but a lot of things in their list is very funny en creative.

Most other armies just don't do it for me. At the far bottom of the list linger the undead. I just do not like undead things.

:shifty:Be on guard my scaly compatriots, it sounds like we have an Elf in our midst.:shifty:

Wood Elves are a great looking army, and its easy to give then seasonal themes. My wife plays Wood Elves.

1: Dwarves, I love them crazy hardcore nutters. In addition to the amazing lore of the Slayers, the fact that they ignore magic in a magic-saturated world, and the fact that Hammerers, Irondrakes, and Longbeards all look downright amazing, it helps that they play with almost the exact opposite playstyle as my Lizards army, a magic heavy highly aggressive melee army with next to no shooting and no war machines. I'm starting a Dwarf army as my second army now. Also the War of Vengeance is my favourite bit of lore in all of Warhammer. Truly second only to the Lizardmen in my eyes.

2: Skaven. Because the Screaming Bell. I don't play Skaven and I still have a Screaming Bell, just look at it. The Skaven have my absolute favourite models with their crazy war machines.

3: Vampire Counts. What can I say? I'm a sucker for good Gothic Horror and the vamps fit my tastes like a glove. Also Vlad.

4: Tomb Kings. Just barely behind the Vampires are these awesome guys, and with the unified Undead army now from the End Times they can count as one army. Also the faction of my absolute favourite character, Settra the goddamn Imperishable. What a total badass, especially in the Lord of the End Times book with only a slight appearance he made me cheer. Truly a king of kings.

5: Empire. Something about the fact that its a great nation of regular humans taking on Chaos and Beastmen and Orcs and everything else the world can throw at it really appeals to me, those are some hardcore humans.

6: Bretonnia. Speaking of humans, it's King Arthur's court times fifty. How could you not love that?

7: Orcs and Goblins. Loving that diversity.

8: Ogre Kingdoms. Just for that ninja Manhunter model. I just think it's funny.

9: Daemons of Chaos. Interesting as they're a big army of unreality murder machines.

10: Beastmen. Not the best army crunch-wise, but I still like them. Better now with Marks of Chaos.

11: Wood Elves. The only elves that I don't instantly dislike, probably because they're crazy sods who would terrify me. At least the Dark Eves are moderately sane, just cruel as hell

12: Warriors of Chaos. Meh, I never really enjoyed these guys.

13: Dark Elves. Not that bad, but I'm no fan of elves.

14: High Elves. Man to hell with these guys, they have foul attitudes, they falsely claim to be the ultimate masters of magic when Kroak was shifting worlds before they were even a twinkle in their cosmic parents' eyes, they take credit for stopping the first invasion of Chaos when without the Lizardmen they'd have been wiped out faster than they could have said "hey who put this stick up my backside," and the only one with a personality that I can actually like is Teclis. High Elves suck.
Actually I'd like to move Bretonnia up to #2 there. The Grail Knights ability to weaken bullets due to simply not believing that they're any good makes me laugh in all the best ways.
