Episode 7! Rogue One had a massive dull spot in the middle where I almost fell asleep, apart from a couple of leads the characters were forgettable and without any real depth.
SACRILEGE!
First of all, I enjoyed both of them when seeing them.
What Rogue One messed up in my opinion was that they didn't manage to make me care about the characters.
The story was way better than TFA but the characters didn't grip me. Rey and Finn did.
As far as I am concerned Rey is quite a weak character. I didn't care that much about her - Chirrut, Baze K-2SO gripped me a lot more because Chirrut and Baze were great friends and were always looking out for each other, while K2 starts out like Arnold Schwarzenegger from Terminator 2 and 3 but showed an appreciation for Jyn at the end, especially when she gave him a blaster. I cared a lot more for all of the characters in Rogue One than Rey or Poe certainly. Finn was a much better character in 7, I agree he was more fleshed out and more original than the other two main characters, but certainly Rey and Poe didn't grip me. If Rey had rejected the role of a Jedi completely rather than reluctantly using Anakin's lightsaber at the end, then she would have gripped me. But Disney are spineless and have made her into a reluctant Jedi in training like Luke before her. Poe was incredibly weak - he wasn't fleshed out at all. There was no depth for him. You don't know half the things about him, only that he's the best pilot in the New Republic (I refuse to acknowledge the existence of the Resistance) and that BB-8 is devoted to him. Nothing else.
Rogue One:
- The robot. I didn't hate him but...meh.
- Tarkin (still bearable but I kept staring at Tarkin because I knew he was CGI and when you look closely it shows. It distracted my from the scene My wife didn't notice)
- first Vader scene (Krennic meets Vader). Dunno why but I hated it.
- Leia (holy crap SO BAD)
- Cheesy death scene of whatever-her-name-was and the guy she was holding hands with.
TFA:
- Trench Run reloaded
- Death Star reloaded
- Death star reloaded killing the planets scene
- more soon.
How was Jyn and Cassian's death scene cheesy? It was original in the fact that they didn't kiss - it wasn't a repeat of Han and Leia in 5.
Also, how could you dislike K-2SO? He was a complete tank! His lines were probably the best in both films!
The CGI was good in both films, but 7 was far more cringe-worthy than Rogue One. The first half of 7 was fine, but the rest was very weak.
