This has been said many times. BIll Burr had a long funny bit on it. I think it gets down to this.

As a dad, husband, and/or boyfriend a man typically falls into the role of utility. The utility looks after the dog. The dog, unlike the kids and the spouse, is always grateful and happy to see him.
