I think it's interesting how popular and thematically rich the Old World still feels. People are still flocking to Warhammer b/c of the Old World. Even though I don't dislike AoS, there's not doubt that I like the look and "vibe" of the Old World more. Maybe with more years of life, AoS will become as interesting? We'll see...

Space Dwarves? Now, that's a name I've not heard for a long time... A long time.

This was the first I ever even heard of them!

I had seen Squats before (I have a copy of the 2nd Edition Codex Imperialis that contained the original Squat army list) but never knew GW made a plastic set of them. Great find!

I’m not so keen on Squats as I am on Warhammer Fantasy Dwarfs because when they existed in 2nd Edition GW made them more like stunted, bearded Imperial Guardsmen and didn’t give them enough of the classic Dwarf design aesthetics, but GW have brought them back into official 40K canon through Grendel Grendlsen, and maybe we’ll see them return as a full-on faction at some point soon in 9th Edition after that lore piece in Psychic Awakening: Pariah made them out as being powerful enough to attack and board an Adeptus Mechanicus vessel. Indeed GW brought back Genestealer Cults who were also originally canned after 2nd Edition, so there’s always a possibility we could see the Space Dwarfs return someday. If they do bring them back, though, I hope they make them more of a Xenos race with more Dwarf aesthetics rather than tie them in with the Imperium as Dwarf Imperial Guardsmen. We’ve got enough Imperium factions.

Of course some manufacturers have taken advantage of their cult following to resurrect them in miniature form. @Lord-Marcus pointed me to this new set of them from Wargames Atlantic:

These chaps certainly preserve the original Squat aesthetic the best - if you’re a fan of the original 2nd Ed models, this new plastic set is for you.

Of course GW themselves have revived them in the spiritual sense, if not in actuality, in the form of AoS’s Kharadron:

These lads have more of an archaic feel compared to mainstream 40K models, but they have a lot more traditional Dwarf aesthetics going for them than GW’s original concept for Squats. Certainly if Squats were reinvented to be a Xenos race rather than a human subspecies, using these chaps as the basis for their designs would be a great way to go.

Another range of Squat proxies I personally like a lot are Mantic’s Forge Fathers for their sci-fi game Warpath:

Iron-Ancestor-768x768.jpeg

Thorgarim-Team-768x768.jpeg

Mantic’s offering has by far the most stuff available, including tanks and the Dreadnought-style walker above (indeed their take on Squats is one of their best-supported and most popular armies for their sci-fi wargame), and these have a more hardcore, militarised look if you want your Space Dwarfs to have especially practical and functional aesthetics. The full range can be seen here:
