Hi All

I'm a long-time VC player, but I've decided I want to hop the fence to these other cold-blooded types.

I know that Slaan lists are the way to go, but I'm looking at mixing it up on my local group, and so was looking at sticking a SOB into my list.

Here is the build I was going to try in a Slaanless list:

Saurus Old Blood
Scaly Skin
Light Armour
Shield
Cold One
Dawn Stone
Blade of Realities

Grand total of 291, a re-rollable 0+ save and 5 attacks of instagib goodness.

He's to park in a unit of CoR with the Skavenpelt banner, so everyone gets an extra attack.

I realize that it can be hard to critique a stand-alone character without looking at the rest of the list, but I still have another 2084 points to sort out - probably a mundane Ancient Engine to ward off range attacks, baby steg with a big gun, 3 units of bait and run skinks, and some spearasaurus, seasoned to taste.

Comments are welcome (hence the post).

I haven't had good luck with Blade of Realities in 8th edition, due mainly to the things I want to kill with it being parked near the enemy battle standard. If they would FAQ the leadership test to be non-rerollable, I'd start taking it a lot more.

Here's my two favorite builds for riding a cold one:

Great Weapon
Dawnstone
Armor of Destiny
Firefly Venom OR Other Trickster Shard

Great Weapon
Dawnstone
Armor of Fortune
Crown of Command

Option 2 is what I usually run if the oldblood accompanies some cold one riders. Never underestimate the power of being stubborn, especially since our cavalry units are usually smaller: every time I've taken the Crown, I've been glad I did.

Yeah, it's a shame about Blade of Realities in this edition. If you could squeeze in a cheaper Slann with Death magic you could snipe the BSB to have more luck with it. Or put the OB in a group of saurus cav and put them on a far flank, where there might be some juicy BoR targets. Of course if the OB is your general this would put his inspiring presence in a poor location.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

My theme is for Lore of Metal. I could in theory use Golden Hounds or Final Transmutation on the BSB's unit. It's just hard to fit everything in on 2k4 points.

I've also just re-read the Skavenpelt info, and it's only for Skinks. Can't put it on the Cav.

Back to the drawing board.

in the main rule book.

Well in a 2000 pt game i roll with a Carnssaur rider with the Blade of Tzunki and Shield of the Mirrored Pool, with Light armour.
comes to 460 pts.
it seems steep for a lord but after seeing it kill 10 Ironguts with a Tyrant in the unit it made it worth it. I was a happy man.

not too difficult to do (though easier at 2500pts than 2400pts). at 2500pts i've run the following:
Slaan
Plaque of Tepok
Becalming Cogitation
Focused Rumination
Higher State of Consciousness

Oldblood
Glittering Scales
Aura of Quetzl
Great Weapon
Venom of the Firefly Frog

those two together come in at 622, and with minor adjustments they can be fit into a 2400pt list pretty nicely. it's a little more difficult to get the Oldblood mounted, but with some finegaling you could accomplish that without too much difficulty. for instance drop the great weapon and a discipline, and now there's room enough for a cold one mount. other adjustments could work too.

if you're mounted, then you've got a 1+ armor save, and your enemy has +2 to hit in close combat. not too shabby.

but you could get it in there if you have a skink chief BSB carrying the banner on a terradon. i'm not sure that would be a wise move since it's so army-specific, but it's doable.

You could run something close to a naked slann at 2400 and still have the points for a decent oldblood.

Slann w/ Rumination, Plaque of Tepok and BSB is only 315 points. It gives you 285 points to work with for a pretty hardcore OB.

Remember you cannot get a 0+ armor save anymore, the best you can do is 1+.

If a cheap oldblood is what you want, I have one that so far, has killed 2 tuskgor chariots, a doomwheel HPA and masses of infantry without dying:

Oldblood
Shield
Armour of destiny
Sword of swift slaying
Potion of strength

So a 1+ save and 4+ ward. 5 attacks at strength 8 when you pop the potion, this guy comes in at a mediocre 236 if my memory serves.

This can really bring some pain

oldblood
-sword of strife
-potion of strength
-armor of fortune
-dragonbane gem
-shield
He has 7 Attacks at strength5(8) a 1+ armor, 5+ ward, 2+ ward to fire and just kills stuff :)

Here's one that's not the most effective/efficient, but should be entertaining:

Oldblood
Wizarding Hat
Cold One
Light Armour
Great Weapon

5 attacks at ST 7 (albeit always striking last), 1+ AS. Since he is already mounted on a Cold One, the downside of the Wizarding Hat is somewhat mitigated (i think). Combine him with a kitted out priest on EoTG and it should be quite interesting (at least on paper)...

Thank you.

my last army had a slan and an oldblood.

Slan, plaque of tepoc, rumination and becalming disciplines, was a BSB. 365points

my oldblood 231
had Light armour, shield, crown of command, dawn stone and dragon helm.

1+ rerollable AS, with 6+ pary save, and stubborn. he can take on unit's on his own. giving you time to kill the rest of the enemy army.

this enabled me to dominate the magic faze, and gave me an character that could endure. even if he took wound's, he only got killed once, by a oger tyrant, after 3-4 combat round's.

Heres another one I came up with:

Oldblood
Sword of Bloodshed
carnosaur pendant
Potion of strength
Shield
Cold one

+1 save with 8 attacks, after dealing a wound he has 9 attacks! Pop the potion and thats strength 8

281 points :P

Or, in that build I posted, you could drop the potion for the Bane head. The possibility of doing 19 wound lol!

Oldblood
Sword of Bloodshed
carnosaur pendant
Bane head
Potion of foolhardiness
Shield
Cold one

Thats 10 attacks after dealing a wound and charging! With the possibility to deal 20 wounds! Against ogres or something with multiple wounds.

I am so playtesting this ASAP!

another really good one is:
sword of anti-heroes
armor of fortune
crown of command
shield

gives him a 1+ armor, a 5+ ward, a bonus to attack and strength. put him in a huge unit of saurus and push straight for the enemies bunker unit :) thats lots of extra attacks and strength against your enemies best unit/character/hero/lord while being backed up with stubborn saurus warriors.

Well, the Bane Head, Carnosaur pendant, and Potion are all enchanted items - gotta pick just one...
