AoS Number of flying units in the Shadowstrike Battalion

Hello guys.

I'm about to start a Seraphon army with the new battleforce.

As I'm considering options to play them I find myself wondering about the Shadowstrike Battalion.

The description of the battalion seems to imply you can only take 1 unit of Terradons/Ripperdactyls, but I've seen a few threads in which people mention taking 2 units in the battalion.

I suppose I missed a rule (some update or FAQ) so I'd appreciate it a lot if you could enlighten me.

You've not missed anything, if you look at the warscroll for Terradons/Ripperdactyls it states the following,

"A unit contains 3 or more models" so depending on points you could have 9+

Same with Skinks a unit is a Minimum of 10 and max of 40 so you can have 20, 30, 40

Usual Shadow strike is 6 Rippers one priest and as many skinks you can in 2 units, one being 10 the other as many as possible.

You are indeed only allowed to have one unit of Terradons or Rippers in the Shadowstrike bataillon, and two units of Skinks or Chameleon Skinks.

The theoretical maximum for both Flyers is 12 per unit, but to be honest that's so unwieldy that you probably don't want to play it.

Maximum Shadowstrike:
1 Starpriest OR Priest
2x 40 Skinks, OR 2x 20 Chameleon Skinks, OR 1x 40 Skinks and 1x 20 Chameleon Skinks
1x 12 Ripperdactyls OR 1x 12 Terradons

While the minimum would be
1 Starpriest OR Priest
2x 10 Skinks, OR 2x 5 Chameleon Skinks, OR 1x 10 Skinks and 1x 5 Chameleon Skinks
1x 3 Ripperdactyls OR 1x 3 Terradons

I got confused when I read the battalion tutorial:
"Place your terradons "hidden in the clouds", and field also a unit of rippers, placing the bloat toad near the target unit".
I missed the fact only 1 of the 2 units was part of the battalion in this case.
English is a second language, I really missed the subtlety there.

I see your confusion.
As you have noted, if you want to increase the battlefield control you can use one unit of rippers in the battalion AND also another unit of rippers outside of it.
At that point, you begin the battle with 1 ripper unit hidden in the clouds, another one on the field , and 2 bloat toads.

the good part is that a toad is not tied to a specific rippers unit, as it can trigger the frenzy for each ripper, so you effectively threaten much more terrain.

Thanks for the tip. It sure looks like a super sound strategical advice but I'll be compelled to build a unit of each flyers' type.

I mean... Aztec Lizardmen riding pterodactyls!!!
It feels like I've I've been waiting 40 years for these toys ^.^

I also have both Rippers and Terradons.
In fact I made some of them convertible.

Terradons look way cooler IMO.

What I was wondering, if a ripper unit is destroyed (and another is still present), what would happen with 'its' toad. Does that remain in play?

Yes, the toad is treated like a neutral. So he stay all the game.

And if you summon more rippers later they can get the buff from that toad, which is good because they wont bring their own unless they are summoned in the first turn.

It's worth remembering that the only way you can summon rippers in the first turn and place the toad, is via Engine of the Gods, as it's the only summon that happens in the hero phase.

Aw, no probleem getting toads. I can fit three groups in my list to start with
