Help Not so new to this. ;b

Hey everyone, I have been interested in Warhammer miniatures for over a year now, and just got my first set for Christmas!

I found this forum yesterday, and I fell in love with it. There are so many older, wiser wargamers, who are willing to show us young chaps how to do stuff. And everyone is SO positive here! I don't have to worry about getting my head bit off by someone who doesn't like how I did something!

Lizardmen always drew my eye, so their starter kit seemed like the way to go. I saw an article (on this forum-Duh!) about how you can make both a Carno and a Troglodon from the starter kit with an extra base, the Troglodon bits (like the sail, tail, and head) and some green stuff. And this got my gears turning. What else could I modify?
So I just bought some GS off Ebay, and I have been looking at my models to see what I can build. Here's what I am thinking I am able to build:
1 Old blood on Carno.
1 Troglodon. (Using that guy's GS guide)
5 Saurus CO knights (lances)
3 Scar-vets on CO.
10 Saurus warriors (clubs)
1 Sun blood.
1 Astrolith Banner.
1 Skink priest. (Make it so he can opt to ride the Troglodon)
If (big if lol) I can pull all this off, I will be getting over 200$ worth from 60$ worth of miniatures (being broke, that is a BIG deal for me)
I started on the cold ones. I am looking at my rules, (AoS free download) and they say that the CO scar-vet can only have a pick for a weapon . (Please tell me if this has changed, as these rules are somewhat old)

So here is my thought. I will be using lances for the 5 knights, and so will have their hand weapons left over (two of which are picks). So I can use one of Knights weapons with the regular warriors, and get a pick from the regular warriors for the third Scar-vet. I am thinking of taking the extra bits of armor, and beefing up the improv Scar-vets.

That's my thoughts for now, I can share my plans for the Sunblood and Astrolith banner next time.
Any (and I mean any) advice/tips/thoughts would be welcome!

And one last thing, it's great to be here! I have never done anything like this before,(all new water for me) and think I will really enjoy it. Looking forward to learning from Y'all.

So here are some thoughts. I need to paint the shield arms separate from the main bodies (on most, if not all the miniatures) or else I can't really get at the models stomach or the left side of his weapon arm.

So, here is what I came up with. (I haven't seen this before, but that doesn't mean y'all haven't).

I am going to put a drop of Elmers glue on the shoulder joint thingie part (I will have to add a pick to show what I mean)


This way, I can prime and paint the body and the shield arm without missing anything, and I can still glue the parts. Simply flick off the Elmers glue.

Also, quick plug for my glue, TESTORS cement for plastic models 3501 is amazing! It works so well, and the bond is unbreakable (both a good AND a bad thing I guess). The glued spot is stronger the the rest of the miniature.

On to my last thoughts. Color palette. I was going to wait until I had all the miniatures assembled, but I am to impatient to try the stuff I have learned from y'all (glazes, transitioning colors, painting feathers, and more!) So I am going to start painting one of my CO knights (not the Scar-vet, as I want more practice first). I will start as soon as the GS arrives so I can fix (try) the joints/neck on both the rider and the CO.

Again, any (and I mean any) thoughts/advice/criticism is welcome.

I am trying to decide what colors to use, (I will start on the shield arms today) greens, (light and dark) with a off white for the body, and brown shields/gold armor.

Or use @Crowsfoot great idea with purple and white for the body, and black and yellow for the armor.

Really hard call.

Also, I am using acrylic paint, and priming the models before hand. I always wear gloves when I handle the models, so as to keep oil off it. I learned that oil will stop paint/glue from adhering.

It is really hard to decide which color scheme to go for, but I think I am leaning toward a Dark green with light high lights, and an off white belly. I thought about it, and, while @Crowsfoot does have an awesome color scheme, I just don't think that purple is my thing.

It kinda irks me that all the miniatures are right handed. It makes conversions that much harder.

I am chafing at the bit, waiting for my GS to come in. I have only ever modelled with normal modelling clay before, and I am looking forward to using the real deal.

Do y'all want to see some of the 25 mm Warhammer miniatures I modelled?

You might have colors there that are a bit thick and need some serious thinning... might be a good idea to get some thinner medium... though water can do the job till a certain point... (talking about my own experience)
Could be be possible that you'll have to use more than the famous two thin coats of paint in order to keep the details...

This site has a certain charm to it, so i understand why you like it. We have some wonderful people on here. They're definitely older, wiser, not that much but they sure know how to paint, well, most of them.

Sounds like you have gotten some great insight on the wonderful world of painting. Remember, always practice, it doesn't matter how many tutorials you watch, you also have to practice, otherwise you ain't getting better.

Just a friendly tip: Don't have your head to close when using glue, but if you have to, hold your breath and have a window open.

Ohh, and welcome into the addiction that is plastic crack.

PS. When dealing with @NIGHTBRINGER, don't mention Age of Sigmar or the Star Wars prequels. He's not an as*hole or anything, he just has a weird sense of humor

I had noticed @NIGHTBRINGER hates Aos and Prequels (of course, who doesn't hate the prequels?!)

And yeah, I am going to need practice. That's why I am starting on my non heroic units.

And why would I open a window?! Wouldn't that let the fumes escape?

@tom ndege I do need to thin them frequently. Of course, there are several of them that take 7-8 layers to cover the base coat.

I had noticed @NIGHTBRINGER hates Aos and Prequels (of course, who doesn't hate the prequels?!)

I don't actually hate the prequels. I still watch and enjoy them from time to time. I just think that they are inferior to the Original Trilogy. The issue is that when @Lord Agragax of Lunaxoatl and I debate Star Wars, he has the exact opposite opinion, so I spend a great deal of time criticizing the prequels.

I do hate Jar Jar though!


As far as AoS goes... well better not get into that.

@Aginor I will warn you, they are made with modelling clay NOT GS. So they were much harder to make, and I couldn't dream of getting the same level of detail.

These are the homemade models of a young lad, dreaming of getting into a hobby he could never afford.

Oldest (and worst) first. These are like, 4 years old, and I was 12 at the time.

Dwarven hammerers:

Now for Greenskins.

1. Two black orks
2. Two gobbos (one is a fanatic)
3. Two spiders (might use them for jungle swarms)
4 another spider
5 warboss
6 homemade toothpick walls
7-8 a troll I made a few months back.
I made the troll's back bumpy by glueing sand onto the clay.

I know that these are kinda sucky, but remember that this is modelling clay, not GS. (Anyone who has tried to make a miniature with modelling clay knows my pain)

I am actually kinda proud of the warboss's flag, I hand sewed that puppy.
