7th Ed. newbie need help!!!!!!!

hello this is my first time posting!!!!!!!!!
so me had idea for 2000pt list i havn't read the fantasy codex but me have played intro at store and me play two 40k army's
so here it is
slann w/ death
scar-vet on cold one
scar-vet on cold one
2x18 saurus w/ spears and full command
2x12 skink skirmishers
5x cold one cavalry
5x cold one cavalry
3x terradons
about 230pts left

You could add a unit of temple guards to protect the slann, or add a normal stegadon (235 points).
Or maybe some salamanders hunting packs.
Other than that, the list seems good to me, but Im not an expert yet

First off you are definitely going to want to read the Lizardmen Army Book.

I would say a salamander pack, and then some more disciplines/items for the Slann if you want to run him by himself.

reading the lizardmen book would be a good start, but i can tell you that some protection for the slann is a must. a 4+ ward save isnt going to cut it. with the 230pts you could get a couple of disciplines or a small unit of temple guard. also a salamander or two would really help your ranged power, and are great for supporting your CoC.

If you play with a slann, you must take temple guard. Salamanders are always a good idea, they perform a lot better than what they look on paper. Too much cold ones. Too less Engine of the Gods.

I couldn't disagree more, I've had a lot of success running lone slann with the Etheral discipline and I know several top players running similar set ups, TG is faaar from mandatory, its an extremly static and immobile bunker and a total point sink. Its a decent choice but its far from a "must". Looks like a pretty solid list overall, hits hard and fast.

Slann has five wounds, but only unit strenght 3 and toughness 4. You don't even need to wound the thing to win combat, and a lucky magic missile will kill it, not to mention nasty things with magic weapons in an even nastier flying thing. No, lone slann is not competitive, however you look at it. Back in 6th it was as hard to kill as a great unclean one, but those days are over. If you use the toad, you need the bunker. And because it is by far our best lord choice (carnosaur only marches 14, and has too much unit strenght for look out, sir!), the bunker is pretty mandatory in a 2k plus list. at least in a competitive environment. As for cold ones, I fail too many stupidity tests to feel comfortable using them .

And why is your Slann in combat? There is no circumstance that should allow that to happend, if you get a Slann into combat its your short coming, not the Slanns. To kill it with a magic missle you need to be extremly lucky, the chance of blowing yourself up with a double 1 on the miscast table is greater, and with scrolls, several DDs and Becalming Cogitation you should have no problem stopping any spell that poses even the slightest threat. With etheral (and regen and 2+ ward if you're really worried) you will never lose your Slann unless you screw up or are really unlicky. The only thing the lone slann is truly worried about is Pit of Shades, in which case you can just hide in unit of 10 ranked skinks.

While that may be your opinion it has been proven wrong on several occasions, the number 1 ranked LM player in the UK played exclusivly with lone Slann and the best placing LM players in the swedish tournament scene has all been playing lone Slanns. Temple Guard is a competative choice, shoot and avoidance style Lone Slann lists are competative choices. The TGS are easier to play with and makes mistakes more affordable but in the hands of a good player they are pretty equal.

I can't find Dan Heelans list atm, but he play a fairly standard lone slann list (2x12 saurus, 3-4 skink units, 2 terradon units, 2 single sallies, engine, 1-2 scar vets, a unit of kroxigors, 1-2 units of ranked skinks and a second steg, if I recall correctly), and he is the best (or at least the highest ranked) LM player in the UK, 7th in total.

Mick Fair is an australian player who played at the austrialian masters with this list http://www.irresistibleforce.com.au/Masters/2009/MickFair.aspx , which again includes a lone Slann. He ended up 11/16 if I got my the right intel, which is still good considering the Masters is invitaional only and consists of the best players in the country. They use a pretty specific rulespack tho, so some of the standard choices are impossible to take and most players take pretty original lists.

He ended up 11/16 at the tournament, which again is still a good result, especially considering the amount of Deamon players. The list is a pretty standard competative non-TG tournament list. The list is a "mundande list" tho, which means they don't tell what magic items they used (as they posted it before the tournament and obviously don't want to reveal what they have). Heelan played VC at the masters to practice for the European Team Championship so Tom was the only LM player at the event.

Being a denizen of the Pyramid Vault, I'm quite aware of the exploits of "Dan the Slaan" . But he either plays like a god or else his opponents bring to the table similarly... colourful lists.
