8th Ed. New to whfb looking for some help.

Hello all iv bin talked into whfb by my local group and have chosen lizardmen as my first army!! What iam looking for is some advice on what my first purchases should be. We are starting at 1k and the group is very competitive. I want to purchase models i will continue to use beyond this point level. Also any advice on equipimg units and heros would be very much appreciated. Cheers!!

Welcome aboard!

The 1k point list I use is below, although I'm toying with dropping the saurus general, 1 unit of skirmishers, and the razordon to get another skink priest, and unit of 3 teradons.

Core wise - Saurus are (Imho) amongst some of the best melee troops in the game, despite their low Initiative, so plenty of those.

1st list =
Heroes:
* Atvar, Saurus Scar-Veteran – Hand weapon & Shield
* Kassnass, Skink priest of Sotek – Hand weapon, dispel scroll, Plaque of Tepok – Level 1 magic user with Lore of heavens

Core:
* Group Hessef: 10 Saurus warriors, Hand weapon, Shield & Full command
* Group Drefsab: 10 Saurus warriors, Hand weapon, Shield & Full command
* Group Ianxx: 10 Skink skirmishers with blowpipes
* Group Kirel: 10 Skink skirmishers with blowpipes
*
Special
* Group Straha: 5 Cold One Cavalry, No command other than Standard bearer with the Sun-Standard of Chotek
*
Rare:
* Pack Forsiss – Salamander Hunting Pack, 3 Skinks & 1 Salamander
* Pack Skoob – Razordon Hunting Pack, 3 Skinks & 1 Razordon

total cost is 1003 points - our group generally has a 1% leeway in points.

Below is my 1500point list - Not as developed yet as only played a couple of games, but it shows how the basic core from above has evolved, while still keeping essentially the same models

* Atvar, Skink chief with Terradon, Javelin, Light Armour, enchanted shield & Staff of the lost sun
* Skink priest of Sotek – Hand weapon, dispel scroll, Plaque of Tepok – Level 1 magic user with Lore of heavens

* Group Drefsab: 15 Saurus warriors, Hand weapon, Shield & Full command
* Group Ianxx: 10 Skink skirmishers with blowpipes
* Group Kirel: 10 Skink skirmishers with blowpipes

Special
* Group Straha: 5 Cold One Cavalry, No command other than Standard bearer with the Sun-Standard of Chotek
