7th Ed. New to Fantasy & Lizardmen?

Looking to start playing fantasy and the arrival of 8th edition seems a great time to start. I have decided that Lizardmen appeal to me most out of all the armies.

I am wondering if a heavy magic lizardmen list in 8th is viable? If so what models should i look to get to make a fun yet competitive magic heavy 2500 point list?

Get a Slann.

That alone should be a magic heavy list, even without any supporting casters. Give him a couple of good disciples and he will be able to outcast everything.

The concept of "Magic Heavy" has drastically changed now that Power Dice are capped at 12. You can no longer bring multiple spellcasters and throw 16 PD a turn at your opponent and overwhelm his Dispel Dice pool with sheer numbers. That said our slann can exceed that cap with focussed rumination as it essentially means he generates an additional 1 PD for each spell cast, so if you want to be "Magic Heavy" then a slann is a must, beyond that you don't need much else. A slann by himself with an average PD generation of 6 will be able to get off 3 decent spells a turn. If you roll more PD you will be able to get off more spells. If he knows all of a lore then you aren't really limited.

The presence of additional spellcasters means that you have access to more spells and for each additional spellcaster you can generate another PD on the roll of a 6 on one D6 per spellcaster but once again, the pool is capped at 12 at any one time so you gain no real benefit.

8th is forcing you to tailor a list to a broader strategy than just combat/shooting/magic heavy.

So a Slann priest is a must then. So in order to make up the rest of my army what would you guys recommend, do i need a skink priest in addition to the slann or anything? Any suggestions of a good 2500point army to start off with?

i should mention i will be playing alot against high elves, dark elves and wood elves in addition to vampire counts.

definetly get atleast 3 salamanders. i mean in my list its going to be a minimum of 3 of salamanders becouse they rock. and i also play magic almost all the time : slann is awsome, if you dont miscast on a spell and then roll 8 as i did it 4 times in one game and that screwed me, but it was still a draw

It depends on how many scrolls you want to take. Each scroll can only appear once in an army list and you can only take one item frome each type - arcane/enchanted etc

In my list I tend to take one slann and then a priest who carries a feedback scroll (A MUST HAVE item BTW). The priest doesn't tend to do much else other than give me the chance to generate an additional dispel/power dice. The basic spell is nice to have against shooty armies aswell.

The rest of your army will depend upon tactics and the lore you take with your slann. If you take life (Which I am constantly pushing these days) then a TG unit is a good idea as miscasts are not that bad. If you don't then a solo slann might be an idea, if he has 2+ ward against shooting, Higher State of Conciousness, FoRumination and Mystery then he could always put a comet down in the middle of a gunline no sweat. In which case you might want to consider a horde army supported by salamanders (Another MUST HAVE).

Think up some tactics and then build an army to suit that.

yer what everyone else said skinks like loads 70-80 is probably about right if you go all skinks or maybe 30 if not

A lot of people like to have a flying skink priest through which the Slann can channel magic missiles. This is very helpful if your Slann is in the Temple Guard, as the unit might be in combat and the thing you want to shoot missiles at might be out of the Slann's line of sight.

If you decide to go solo Slann, consider taking the Forbidden staff as your arcane item. It adds D6 dice to your pool for one phase, then does D3 wounds to the Slann, who can use his 4+ ward against those wounds anyway. This item guarantees you can get off lots of spells in that one phase where you really have to get things done.

Slann in TG on the other hand, you would always want cupped hands of the old ones, as it will help protect the TG from miscast damage. Solo Slann on the other hand, only has a 42% chance of taking an unsaved wound from the strength 10 miscast hit.

So would the following items im thinkng of buying be a good starter point for my first lizardmen army?

Skink Priest
Lizardmen Battalion box
3x Kroxigors
3x salamanders
Skink warriors
Stegadon
3x Terradons

Should i add anything else to that, or is there something on that list you recommend i do not get?

i will think twise about those terradons. IMHO they way far worse than they were. and for war machine hunting you can take chameleons they would be better. other stuf, flying nerfed, drop rocks isnt important that much, marchbloking allmost imposible, in CC thay fail, the one unique thing about landing in forrest is nerfed asswell becouse everybody can see you there. i would rather buy another 3 salamanders instead. or meiby even more skinks becouse there going to be alot of them. or more saurus. and i would trade stegadon to tample guard unit also should be better with slann.
but thats just my thoghts and the 8 ed isnt out yet so all my talking is bassed on rummors.

IMHO totaly forget them, sallys are were better in 7 ed now they are hugely better.
i better will take skirmishers than razordons.
